crocuses a month ago, lotsa hyacinths since then, all the jonquils and daffodils followed suit, the shorter early tulips are opening when the sun is out...but so many of the other bulbs have turned into a buffet for deer, rabbits and maybe chipmunks.

have a pretty vase filled with daffodils in the living room, but I was a day late spreading more cayenne after it rained recently and don't know how much damage those critters may have done to the special area where we planted 80 bulbs last Fall.

Still have enough daffs and jonqs to put one or two on each table in the cafe...

she completely beat the pneumonia but is about half as sharp as she was just two months ago.
hemorrhaging the money we thought would last two more years, might last a couple more months with the cost of 24/7 in-home care.
She can dress and shower and stuff, sends some crazy emails even, but without warning gets crazy, so can't be left alone though she can go a few days functioning well...just never know when dementia hits so too risky to try to guess.

we really had played it well, planned it out over years to keep her home (where she wanted to be) and would have been placing her in a sweet assisted/memory care place near me (on the grounds of Paul Revere's copper factory!) then selling her condo and letting her enjoy socializing at the new facility with that money until no longer knowing one hand from the other and would become medicaid eligible miraculously at the same time.

planned it well, yup. And it would have worked if not for this deadly common cold virus.

So home she stays with care, might have to move her here in a month or two and wait out the virus.

unfortunately i have become fluent in both types of reverse mortgaging, but I think I finally have a good lead on a bank that will do a large HELOC without insisting the deed be changed (life estate with me and sister on it as the remaindermen).

Also, the added costs of both RM's are severe. Original FHA style would have about 30K closing costs because of the added insurance, the newer equity elite style has way lower costs but gives the entire amount in a lump sum so the interest is on the max borrowed rather than the amount drawn...

I could have her medicaid eligible in minutes if and when nursing home is the only option.

for families that can trust their kids (desperate times make desperate kids ...) look into a life estate which will protect your property from being taken if you or your wife need skilled nursing/nursing home care.
Not assisted/memory care, real nursing home care.

you can also set up a family trust (don't know why but the one my parents were advised to do is an Irrevocable Family Trust).
We were advised to transfer 7K of my parents' cash accounts each month because that was what the Comm of MA deemed the costs of nursing homes back then. The idea being that you also protect your cash from being seized too. And when you end up under 2K in cash, you are pretty much ready to be medicaid eligible. Despite this plan, we left several thousand unprotected but that's another story...and that is quickly being spent now.

Don't count on my brain here, we did ours 15-20 years ago for my parents, but a trustworthy attorney specializing in these elder issues will know how it works best in CA. I'm only licensed as a know-it-all in MA

my wife and I do have a Revocable Living Trust, appointing our son as executor...he has a copy, but we haven't sat down with him and the attorney who drew it up, to review all contingencies...

that's going on the "To Do" list, along with "final arrangements", which I have to go over with my wife

just want to say, my parents' home is not in a trust. It's a Living (or life?) Estate.
The cash is mostly in the Irrevocable Family Trust.
