school out for summer?
missed you.
164. Author: DaQueenBeezDate: Fri, 6/2/2017, 11:28PM EST
School is out! Working the summer program again, but it's SO much more relaxed! Also, for the time being (knock on wood) all of the class parents would likely pass a psych eval, which is a welcome change of pace! Had a couple of real winners this fall...made life unnecessarily hellish for everyone, especially me.
Made it through and got a raise out of it, so not a total loss lol.

How are you, Frank? Good to see ya!

Had I known the open sign was lit I would have had breakfast here....

Morning everyone!

Irish oatmeal & coffee, watching the bunny romp in the yard and our baby robins taking flight lessons (while their noisy parents go off at the mouth/beak all morning). One fluttered into bunny's apple twig pile. Little bully kicked a baby robin's azz.
I'd take a top up on the coffee, if you have any ready. I'd make it myself, but currently I'm waaaay too entertained with the standoff between bun and mama robin.

Ya know what's awesome? A Saturday with NOTHING on the calendar! No workshops, no "I'll just finish this at home" work, no "we need to have coffee because you never have time for your friends anymore," people, no "grab the princess and get the hell out of dodge before someone wants to have coffee on my free Saturday," no NOTHING! I'm ahead on summer prep, the calendar is clear, the sun is warm and my coffee is...almost gone.

One of these things needs to change...

Sounds nice.. I've already been hassled with work stuff... still haven't had breakfas even... Sad

Warming up Thai leftovers for lunch, if anyone wants some. Khoi soi, green curry chicken and tofu massaman. I think we have sticky rice & some crispy rolls left too...

I'd love some of the tofu massaman, but only if they stir fry fresh tofu, not deep fry it.
173. Author: DaQueenBeezDate: Sat, 6/3/2017, 4:40PM EST
I don't mind the fried stuff in certain applications; fried tofu in sweet chili sauce is yummy. This is fresh, though. Best food truck food ever.

on my way! love massaman.

So...weird question time:
Does anyone know anything about Great Barrier Reef dive tours? Boyo has a port call and leave approved and wants to scratch that item off his bucket list. He has been scuba diving before, but isn't certified and with limited days in Australia, he says he would rather dive as a noob with an instructor actually the Reef than waste his days in a pool getting certified to dive on his one remaining day. I know nothing about any of it...if I were there, I'd be out with my stakeout scope trying to spot Hugh. He has a point - as expensive as a good tour will be, he's only likely to get this chance once, so he may as well make it a good one because "what else am I going to spend my money on while I'm floating on this tub anyway?" Says he wants an underwater camera for his birthday, but I really think he'll be better off renting a NICE one...it seems to be a pretty booming business there.
Anyone have any knowledge on the subject? Is he going to need a pair of tight khaki shorts and koala repellent, or just a hefty beer budget?
176. Author: MACSDate: Sun, 6/4/2017, 3:57PM EST
He's likely going to Cairns, Australia, eh?

Sometimes MWR will set up tours, such as the one you mentioned. My only advice would be - GO!! I visited Cairns, went out drinking and carousing... and missed my shot. Never went back, and it is one of those things I always think about and say, "I wish I would have done it." They do have tours for experts and beginners, alike.

On one of his other days ashore... might I recommend a drinking establishment? The Fox and Firkin.

Yes khaki shorts, no koala repellent. And a moderate beer budget. You like Fosters?
My in laws went last summer for a mission trip and loved it. I will find out what company they dived with. Went out with a big group and all learned on site. Or did they snorkel...? They had fun, I do know that. I'll find out

178. Author: DaQueenBeezDate: Sun, 6/4/2017, 6:23PM EST
Macs - yup, Cairns! Dunno how long they'll be there, but he has 5 days for sure (as sure as anything actually gets in the navy, anyway) to play. Diving the GBR has been on his bucket list for a loooonnnng time, so he's calling it a birthday present to himself. I'll pass along your drinking establishment recommendation, lol! They're also supposed to hit Brisbane. He said he wants to take the train down to Australia Zoo. That kid watched so much Steve Irwin as a kid, I thought his brain was going to melt in front of the tv. Kiddo is working ridiculously hard and putting up with all the crap that comes with the military, AND the stress of being homeport-ed downwind of Kim Jong Bowl-cut, so he deserves the cool stuff when it comes along. I'm pretty crazy jealous of this stop, though...the Reef is definitely a thing to see before it's gone. Finding Nemo LIVE, on stage! The rainforest tours look amazing, too!

HillbillyJosh - ixnay the marsupial repellent - got it! If you could find out more, that would be AWESOME! He gets limited opportunities to research this stuff, so I told him I'd do some looking and narrow his search a bit - I don't want to lead him astray! Dunno about the fosters - he's a craft beer guy. More likely to choose water over cheerleader beer...at least he was before being surrounded by sailors and marines round the clock, so who knows now?

Aussies do not drink Fosters. They think it sucks.

They drink VB (Victoria Bitter, and it is not bitter), or Toohey's.

Been to Brisbane, as well... and Melbourne, and Sydney. There's a zoo in Brisbane that will let you hold, and take pictures with, a koala. Lone Pine Sanctuary: http://www.koala.net/

I went, I held a koala... I took pictures. SUPER soft fur... Super SHARP claws.

Just got an IM. 5 days is actually 4, which is actually more like 3.5 after they wait for people to stop screwing around and call liberty.
Thanks Josh!
Macs - thanks for the tip!

Also, does anyone know of a good "plug in & listen on car trips" kind of language learning program?
The one I actually NEED is mandarin. The one I WANT is Japanese.

Here is a rating of language learning programs by PC magazine...Rosetta Stone and Duolingo got the highest score, Fluenz and a couple others scored right behind...

Well, it's gonna be an absolutely EPIC car trip if you're gonna learn either Japanese OR Mandarin from an audio program ... you'll be able to drive from New York to Los Angeles in the time it'll take for you to learn to say "Hello, how are you, my name is QueenBeez, my pencil is yellow" ...

Lol - don't doubt that. Learned some Mandarin classroom basics like "do you need to go to the potty," "it's time to sit down," "let's go," and "Mommy will be back soon," & the like from random apps, and they seemed to work okay...All of my Chinese former students speak English fluently now and show no signs of permanent emotional scarring from me saying unintentionally horrible or weird things to them, anyway! Every year when I get ANOTHER Mandarin-only kiddo, I tell myself I really need to just try to learn the damn language, so... looking for options that fit into the life madness as much as possible.

Delta - I think duolinguo is one of the apps I used with my Chinese students, and it's the one the Princess uses for her Spanish class; wonder if/how it would work in the car? Think Thinking that, on those 4 hour drives to Boise, it suuuuuure would be preferable to what I do now (Sinatra vs Imagine Dragons playlist debate with princess, followed by her plugging into headphones and randomly demanding that I turn down my horrible old-person music. By the way, do you know that ZZ Top is on the OLDIES station now??? SOOOOOOOO many kinds of wrong.)

Is the coffee still hot? I brought my own BSU mug...never go anywhere without it!

In laws came by last night. And confirmed they had snorkled....
But there was another boat near theirs that was doing scuba lessons.
And one couple was staying at their hotel.
She seemed to think it was novice.

But did say that they feed the fish pellet food of some sort while they were all in the water.

That's pretty cool.

I once smuggled a pocket full of French fries into the snorkel lagoon, at Atlantis. My sister who was 22 at the time, (half lit mind you,) was complaining about not seeing any fish. Well.... Old Hillbilly pulled out his fistful of soggy French fries and started shredding them under water. I waited a couple seconds and told my sister to look underwater now.
She started screaming!!! Barracuda!

Hee,hee,hee...., that was fun.

Be sure to bring a pocket full of French fries with ya to the Great Barrier Reef.

Make the fishes come to you.

That's all I got, Happy Saturday All.
200. Author: DaQueenBeezDate: Mon, 6/12/2017, 7:13PM EST
Hmm....dunno about the French fries. If it attracts barracuda, who knows what it will draw on the continent where everything wants to kill you! Don't want to have another Steve Irwin incident... betcha croc hunter had a pocket full of French fries Not talking

Next stupid question: anyone have any idea if there is a bakery in Cairns or Brisbane that will let you order a birthday cake online and deliver it to a boat?

Asking for a friend...
