Good stuff it is. And I am a fan of da Moose also. Had it in Missoula about 15 years ago but it was not distributed in my area until about 5 years ago.

Siberian Night Russian Imperial Stout, 9.7% ABV, from a case I've been aging since March 2016.

After 4 years, it's amazing. A completely different beer.. Bitterness gone, replaced with a super-complex chocolate/coffee flavor mix and smooth, full body. There's so much going on that it maxes out my palate's capabilities, I can't even process it all. But that's a GOOD thing!

Makes me glad I have a bunch more cases I bought in the intervening years.

I'm gonna drink this stuff exclusively on a 4-year delay from now on!

Huh? I thought beer just turned skunk with age. Or is that just with the IPA stuff I drink?

I thought that too. Then I learned I was wrong!

Many common beer types turn bad after awhile, primarily low-ABV% beers like lagers, IPAs, etc.

However, high-ABV% "heavy" beers like stouts are just like cigars! They get far better with age!

This blew my mind when somebody told me, but it's true.

You can try it yourself! Get a stout or stout-like beer that's 9% or higher ABV, put it in a dark corner of your basement for a few years. You may be amazed what happens. I was!

Now I'm a convert, with a collection of cases of stouts with different acquisition dates (MM/YY) sharpied on them... just like I do with cigars!

Flavors profile when new is usually bitterness and a relative simplicity of flavors. I mean, it's good and tasty, you can drink it immediately and it's nice. Most people DO drink them immediately. However, if you age them for a few years, the bitterness usually disappears mostly or completely, and that simplicity has turned into a very complex set of rich, coffee/cocoa flavors that are pretty amazing.

Try it! But cool temperatures and protection from light are important, which is why basements (away from windows) work so well.

See how educational this place is!
I stopped buying bottles. Only cans since my bad experience with stuff. I usually only buy stuff 7+% or higher. I love pretty much every IPA coming out of Victory. But I just discovered butterfly in the flower and I'm in love. Don't think I'll have the discipline to age but ... Yeah forget that but Still appreciate the education Pudding

You're welcome.

Want a beer that's awesome new, doesn't need aging, and comes in cans (that look awesome as a bonus)?

Dead Guy Ale, by Rogue brewery. I think it's 6.8% ABV and is a German Maibock style beer.

I was at a bar in New Hope PA and this stranger at the next table overheard me and my pal debating what beer to try. He said, "Both of you, order Dead Guy Ale, if you don't like it, I'll pay for it." So we did. He didn't have to pay for it. Wow. Been loving it ever since.

Its web page also features one of those "taste charts", in this case in the shape of a 5-pointed star, and it's THE ONLY such chart I've seen that is DEAD ON correct. This stuff tastes just like the chart indicates. Malty toffee, bit of bitterness for a nice bite, very faint nuttiness and roastiness. Finally a taste chart that's worth something!

Oh, I've been doing it for years, too. I learned about it quite awhile ago.

This is merely the first time that I had this paticular stout at that particular relatively-advanced age, and decided to drink it on that delay permanently. Other stouts I like fresher, with less time on them.
