unopened boxes

I have a couple of unopened boxes of cigars and no room in my humidors for them. They still have the factory plastic wrap. Is it safe to leave them on the bookshelf for a few weeks? Longer? Anybody had any experience with this situation?

And please, no volunteers to take them off my hands. The only Volunteers I'm interested in right now are a certain football team with an flim-flam man for a coach.

Put each box in a ziplock bag with a broveda pack. The factory plastic wrap will not retain the humidity

or put em in a small cooler or large Tupperware with the bovedas.......they'll stay fresh for quite a while

Throw a poker game and give them out along with cheap potent booze (imagine your cigars are on the cheap side too).

Step 1: Get poker game going.

Step 2: Give the players cheap booze and cigars.

Step 3: ???

Step 4: Profit!!!

Depends on where you are.............if you are in a high humidity environment you probably don't need to do anything. I have an air-conditioned garage that stays up at 70% (must be all the leaky walls) - not best for human comfort but OK for cigars. I use old hardened bovedas to soak up excess moisture and then recycle them indoors.

Remember you have the wood as well as the cellophane as some short term protection. For longer periods, put in a big ziplock baggie or for even longer use tupperware or cooler as mentioned. If it seals real good you could forgo the boveda for a few weeks....things don't change very fast in sealed environment.

For long term storage a boveda should be used so you can actually monitor and maintain the right condition. My bovedas seem to last forever in tupperware. I use 69% and my house stays at 55% so the spread is not much. I have not bought new ones for years. If I was in the desert I am sure it would be a lot different.

TTom is spot-on. When I first started my "accumulation" stage (...but was unprepared for them...), I had to keep my sealed boxes in different clothes drawers for a month or so. After finally setting up a cooler with Heartfelt beads, I was able to put them in there. Four years later when I opened one of them up, they were in perfect condition, and more importantly, in perfect *smoking* condition. So the bottom line: under most circumstances, don't sweat short term "unprotected" storage and if you place them in Ziplocs with beads or Bovedas, you'll be fine.

That's a bunch of good suggestion, especially the poker game. Thanks to all. I ended up putting them in a small cooler with a couple of Smiley pucks and a sockfull of Mimi cat crystals. That should hold them until there's room in the rotation. Thanks again.
