Faux Conservatives and Remembering the Old Right.
1. Author: RayRDate: Sat, 2/6/2021, 2:31PM EST
Paul Gottfried, Interim Editor in Chief of Chronicles Magazine introduces a new series of articles "Remembering the Right" which is delving into who true conservatives of the past actually were and stood for vs. the Conservatism, Inc. of today.

Quote:
The transformation of the movement has been so complete that what goes by the name “conservative” is often no more than the proclamation of leftist positions that the left has now abandoned for even more radical ones.

One is reminded in this instance of the caustic definition of “conservatism” made by the Southern divine Robert Lewis Dabney in the second half of the 19th century:

…[A] party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable growling, but always acquiesces in the innovation. What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today one of the accepted principles of conservatism.

Dabney was ridiculing what he took to be the party of “Northern conservatives,” whom he believed were gulling his fellow Southerners and who he thought were out to advance their own careers while lining their pockets. These Northerners were transparently lying pols who claimed to be what they were not.

Today, faux conservatives are a more serious threat to the right than they were in Dabney’s day. They steal the right’s identity by rewriting its history and enshrining “the resisted novelty of yesterday.” They throw out narratives that no longer fit their desired image or satisfy the tastes of their donors. They also throw out empty rhetorical references to “values” and “principles” that they attribute to conservative thinkers whose real views they shy away from, lest they alienate patrons. Whether we are talking about disquieting thinkers being thrown into a memory hole or being reduced to innocuous objects of celebration, those who suffer either ignominy need to be made once again fitting subjects of discussion. That is what the contributors to this series will try to do.

There is no difference between the democrats and republicans, just the lightening rod characters participating in a political kabuki dance to keep the party faithful paying attention.

As stated by Gottfried there is a difference between the Democrats who call themselves "progressives" and Republicans who call themselves "conservatives", the Republicans move further toward the left as the leftist Democrats become even more radical leftists.

The difference between the old right conservatives and those of Conservative, Inc. today is more stark which is why this series of articles is so educational.

The last few years the left and right have reminded me of the WWE.........in front of the camera it's a big political battle royale but behind closed doors they're bumping coc*s in the shower.

does the GOP, as the party of the right, the Old Right, have a stated vision for America, and what values they embrace?

seems like fighting off linkages to QAnon while normalizing white supremacy looks to be the whole show now

Didn't you read? The majority of the GOP is made up of faux conservatives and has been for a long time, like since their inception. The GOP was from the beginning the original progressive big government party, dominated by power hungry corrupt busybodies not unlike modern Democrats sans the most repulsive Marxist traits of the left.
The only thing that is guaranteed is they will grumble and bitch but eventually acquiesce to the stupidity and evil of the left, if not adopting those same evils but just maybe just in a less extreme form. They conserve nothing that is fundamentally meaningful, good and sound of the American tradition. If there is a remnant of the party has any old right and libertarian sensibilities and rocks the boat, they are typically tolerated somewhat but reprimanded and shunned by the party elite who fear a party coup d'état. The same could be said for the Democrats who would have a cow if a classical liberal movement ever raised up and threatened their status quo.

So it's a good question, what is their "stated vision for America, and what values they embrace"? Well, talk of stated visions and values is cheap anyway by political parties who readily break from them, but that's enough to satisfy most unthinking Amerikans who only have feelings and just need to be fans of a team, no matter how crappy it truly is. The stated vision of the faux conservatives always includes smaller government and fiscal responsibility, but when has that ever happened in any meaningful way?
To me the GOP is just a less obnoxious version of the Democrats but still obnoxious all the same.
