Gurkha Suggestions
1. Author: maxd518Date: Fri, 3/1/2024, 11:03AM EST
ok everyone, I'm hoping I could get some input from some of you cigar aficionados her in the forum. I've been hearing a few people talk about Gurkha's and I've been looking at some here on the website. I want to try some but I'm always hesitant to try something new without suggestions. I'm a big fan of Rocky Patel and buy a lot of RP Flor de San Andres, The Edge Habano Toro. I also buy a lot of Cohiba Connecticut Robusto, and My Father The Judge. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Run.

A few years back, I sent a now-MIA member (Carson) some Gurkhas I had accidentally accumulated. He got sick, quit smoking and left the forums. Don't make the same mistake.

Well, I guess I'm on to looking around a little more to broaden the variety in my humidor! hahaha

Many cigar smokers consider Gurkha to be one of the worst brands. It's clearly a brand that's too focused on marketing and thinks if they give a crappy cigar a ridiculous MSRP and a fancy band then always sell it on sale or below MSRP people will pay normal prices for it thinking they're getting a deal. I've tried a few in my early days and wasn't impressed with the more expensive ones but I did like the Gurkha Prize Fighter budget cigar. I only see them for sale on one site though.

Got it. I'll drop the thought, 2 responses and both negative. I'd rather not smoke a cigar if it's going to be bad!

What is your fascination with cigars that sell at a 92.8% discount off MSRP? Is it because you think you’re able to buy a great cigar, usually higher prices denote higher quality, for a huge discount? One would think anyone with the slightest of common sense would realize what they really are which is nothing but hugely overpriced turds that have to practically be given away before anyone will buy them.

Stick with the boutiques and stay away from the conglomerates and you'll most likely find less cigars you don't like.

Boutiques can be hit or miss. Most have little to no control over the tobacco. Some brands purchase their tobacco at auction where it’s luck of the draw. While others actually have delivery contracts but they are still beholden to the grower. Either way consistency can be hard to maintain.

On the other hand older established brands like Fuente and Padron as well as a few others are vertically integrated and are able to deliver consistently year after year.

Can’t beat the savings on the Gurkhas, for some reason those sticks with an MSRP of $199.99 are always like 95% off…Herfing

WOW, you seem angry? You doing ok brother? Or do you simply get off by trying to make someone feel like an idiot for simply asking for a suggestion! You obviously have some type of inferiority issue going on, I was simply asking for suggestions. I've been smoking cigars for maybe 2 years and listed a few that I like, but looking for suggestions to open things up a bit. Thanks I guess, for NOT ANSWERING question!

It's just because you're new. Don't take it personally. The FOGs love ragging on Noobs especially Noobs asking about Gurkha. You actually probably haven't seen the worst of it yet. It's still early in the day. Lol

According to my limited research (…which could be wrong…), Gurkha’s offered here are all, or mostly all, licensed by the Mothership and sold as “real” Gurks, when, in fact, they’re not. A quick peek at the brand’s website doesn’t even list any CI-affiliated stores as retailers so iffin’ you still have a hankerin’ to try a Gurkha or two, look at those vendors instead.

I only classify cigar brands as either boutique if they operate solely or conglomerate if they are part of one so I consider AF, Padron, LFD, etc. boutiques. There are even some multi brand companies that are solid like Ashton, San Cristobal, and LADC are all the same company. Jonathan Drew sold Drew Estate to Swisher but since nothing was changed in the company, they are still good, consistent cigars. I waste less money buying boutiques than conglomerates like Altadis and General cigar. I like some of their cigars but Ive had to try more to find blends that I like than say LFD or Oliva which I've liked 90% of.

As fast as the car will take you from those cigars!!!!

This is sort of funny and I totally get the NEWB thing. I have about 30 years total time spent between active duty military and supporting our military as a civilian... there's not much someone is going to say to me that's going to hurt my feelings and I do get a kick out of poking back at someone that seems to be easily bothered by a simple question! hahaha

Check out the "Whatcha smoking azzhats 1,000,000 vol.2" thread. That will help you see what's popular with many experienced smokers. You can get good recommendations for cheap cigars, premiums, and high-ends whatever your looking to buy and try. You won't see any Gurkhas there. Even if someone smoked one theyd probably be too afraid to post it.

That’s ‘cause Tony smoked the bulk of his Gurks during Gurkfest I and II. Cool

Max, I've tried a few Gurkhas and a couple were okay but wouldn't buy another. Try Arturo Fuente, I've never had one I didn't like.

Gurkha for the most part makes mediocre cigars - at least most of the ones on CBID. There are a few awful cigars and a few good ones. I still have a few good or decent ones, but the current ones are few. Avoid anything infused and tubed as a general rule, but the Ghosts are pretty good. Any cigar that is highly rated is suspect as many of them got that award years ago and the quality has generally dipped since then. I've smoked 850 or so Gurkhas and still pick up a few if the price is right. If you need a recommendation for any of them, drop me a PM.

I think anyone who buys Rocky Patel cigars probably should also buy Gurkhas.

Buy less smoke less, enjoy better choices.

Or don’t. They’re your choices man.

I’ve got a lot of fivers of RP. I did enjoy the Vintage 1990 petite perfecto, I think it’s a 4.5 x 42. But the others I’ve not appreciated at all. I see that the RP 60 is quite popular on CB and prices went through the roof right past MSRP. Having a mixed bag of results w/RP, I decided not to risk it on the high bids re: RP/60
EDIT: Z, have you ever tried anything by Caldwell? Or any of you guys have an opinion?

Caldwell has some good cigars, as a matter fact there's a Caldwell Midnight Express in the box I sent to you this morning along with some other cigars I enjoy so something for you to look forward to jeebling.
28. Author: ZRX1200Date: Fri, 3/1/2024, 4:29PM EST
I haven’t been blown away by any Caldwell but I also haven’t had a bad one. Think I went through three or four different lines from my local shpo then lost interest in trying more. Not bad at all. Certainly better than Gurkha or offerings from that absolute spanner RP
29. Author: jeeblingDate: Fri, 3/1/2024, 5:21PM EST
Thanks Pops, I’m looking forward to trying that.
Z, thanks for the feedback and your other suggestions as well.

Caldwell……like Z said….nothing bad…….some pretty good…………….but I haven’t made a box purchase either.
Some of his Corojo offerings are good (ie. Long Live the King)
I almost bought a box of those a while back…..cause, well…………you know……

The only Caldwell I smoked under ideal circumstances (Blind Man's Bluff) did not cause me to buy any more.

I was a fan of the Gurkha Class Regent, Centurian, Nepalese Warrior and Legend (?) way back when. I haven't bought any Gurkhas for years. I probably still have some Regent and Nepalese still sitting in the bottom of a tuper.

The blends probably have changed since I was buying them and now sold under the same name or different name. Plus, I'm sure there are a bunch of new ones out there that I haven't tried so I can't comment on anything that they are putting out now.

Thanks PapaWhiskey! I wasn't really determined to try Gurkha's but have been seeing a few people smoking them at the local cigar bar I go to so I figured I'd ask... didn't mean to start a **** storm! hahaha
I do but Fuente's, a few different ones and loved them all. All I really wanted was a little input on something else to try outside of the norm that I've been smoking and assumed I'd get a few recommendations here?

I can recommend stuff I like, but keep in mind, I smoke cigars that are considered good for my demographic (I.e., poor azz graduate student) but maybe not for most of this forum (I.e., upstanding adults who are retired or have good jobs).

I like the Fugazi COTY line quite a bit. I also tend to like the Caldwell stuff. They put out good sticks and don’t charge a fortune for them. When I’m feeling a bit fancy, I pick up some La Aurora Preferidos when they are on sale. Their Cameroon one is stellar.

Edit: although even I stay away from Gurkhas

Good question but I have no clue about those retailers.

Or, could be those retailers are buying from a distributor that is authorized to sell within a certain area. Back-in-the-day when I was at Sony, in some parts of the country we had distributors that handled our products in a defined geographical area. Those areas didn’t have a regional Sony office so it was more cost effective to let someone else manage those territories.

From a nOOb. You could get some more targeted recommendations if you made some comments about what you are looking for in a cigar.

Something thick and chewy or peppery or woody. Something that will put you on your azz, Something light with a little spice. Something 45 min or maybe an hour and a half. Something $5 or $10 or $20 Or whatever you think you are looking for

adding to King of the Cove's list of quality cigar brands, here are a few more that won't break the bank, for most of their offerings...I liked these a lot during my earlier cigar smoking years, and the old remainders buried in my stash are still good smokes...I'll occasionally get some fivers to see if the latest iterations are as good as my memory of them.

Camacho
Diesel
Espinosa
Joya de Nicaragua
Man O' War Puro Authentico
Oliva
San Lotano

higher priced brands that were very good;

Get a life there are better cigars out there . I do not have to read anything above and have not . I am sure all that involved gave good advice . Just read your post Rocky sucks azz how many different blends can you actually have . My Father makes some good smokes . But if you send me a gur****a I will just throw it away .
