Ironic.. the Picture Rayder showes of his Dads ship and in the documentery on it states this...
"From the landings at Betio on the 20th through the 28th she remained in the area supporting the marine assault forces as they fought the first vigorous beachhead opposition to an American amphibious landing." 1943...

and you guys are talking about these ships and the largest amphibious landing on Iraq since D-Day.... Very Cool...

Marines' Ships Come In, But None Go Out In Policy Change
Virginian-Pilot (NORFOLK OCT. 24)
The Iwo Jima's return to port this morning signals not just the end of a deployment, but also the end of an era in Navy doctrine: Routine six month deployments by three ship amphibious ready groups are officially a thing of the past. And for the first time in years, no sizable Atlantic Fleet Marine Corps force will be at sea. Traditionally, when one Marine laden amphibious group returns, another has recently sailed to replace it. It's part of a sea change in Navy Marine Corps strategy, from having a small, forward deployed force to maintaining a larger group of Marines that is ready to surge to global hotspots. A similar model was used with a pair of seven ship amphibious task forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A truly awesome photo.

Don't know why, but Pearl Harbor comes to mind. I'm surprised they deploy so close together, regardless of radar, sonar, air cover, etc. etc.

They get closer than that when we do a "unrep". An Unrep is when a supply ship comes side by side with the recv'ng ship and hook up with lines and fuel lines to transfer fuel and stores.
