Chief - you surf 'em ocean swell?

I surfed the beaches of So Cal as a kid, but not here and not for lack of good surf. There is a large surfing community here that is loosely centered around Greg Noll.
Just north of the beach in the picture is a small beachfront state park that is widely utilized by surfers both local and transient.

Chief I use to body surf and boogie board in so Cal, around Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido great times.

BBob, I did more bodysurfing than anything else, mainly at Venice and Santa Monica beaches. Up here, the water is cold w/o suit and I prefer watching.

Chief - I am an East Coast surfer. I went to school in New Hampshire and surfed almost every day, all year there. I've been out of school and working in Manhattan for a while, so I only get waves on my occasional weekend visits to NH, Maine, or the Cape, and on "surf orgy" trips to Central America, where I'll spend 10 hours a day in the water.

Well, that's subjective!
For about 8+/- months a year it is close to heaven. I'm located in a 10 mile long strip that has slightly warmer weather than Monterey (Cal) for most of the year, created by something called the Brookings Effect (I think it is Google-able).
There are few people here, property is cheap by Cal standards, and only 20% of the county is 'fee-simple', the rest is grossly underutilized county park, state park, or Federal park land.
Sadly, we are now in the 4 month period of wet and cold misery--I bet it has rained 15" this month alone.
Smart people bail out to Arizona/New Mexico or Baja at this time of year. But Chief is not the brightest ember in the campfire, so he stays put.

At my parents old place the Elk would come and graze the flower beds. Gets your heart going when you step outside in the morning and hear a big snort right behind you.

are these teh decendant's from Hearst's stock that venture from FT. Hunter Ligget?

You ask a serious question--I'm not good at that stuff!

I cannot imagine these elk have originated at Hearst's enclave, about 400+ miles south. There are just too, too many local and regional place-names (Elk Valley, Elk Creek, Elk Mountain, etc.) that imply the animal's long-term presence.
But you do pose an interesting question.
