Officially known as Nick's Original Big Train Bar, this place has been around in one form or another since 1918. It started as a place for locals to get liquored up before the train ride to Baton Rouge. Even then, Nick's was famous for its stiff drinks and creative concoctions. Little has changed since: it remains a crumbling dive of cracked foundations, leaning walls, clogged toilets and shaky pool tables. Yet its funky charm is exactly what keeps this place packed almost nightly and well into the early morning. Right across from the Dixie Brewery in a not-so-safe neighborhood, its one of the few places in the city where everyone from street folks to bankers and students come to rub elbows and have a few laughs.
