Well, for what it is worth, economists write in a vacuum...economies never operate in such. Last I checked China was doing fine. Russia wasn't doing to bad either...That being said, we aren't anywhere close to being a communist state, let along a Socialistic. We certainly have had moments where we have had Nationalistic interventions, but that has always been true in times of crisis (i.e. WWII, Great Depression, etc.) so I don't think that we can read too much into that...

Lemme see...

China has manipulated their currency and was most likely responsible for the US going off the Gold Standard...check

Russia...filed for an effective "bankruptcy" and was allowed to reunify all the "good" parts and quash the "bad" ones into submission...check

Of course we don't live in a nation where they give paychecks, food, takeover private manufacturing companies that shred stock/bondholder's equity, create "jobs" and manipulate the data for re-election purposes with so many variations that it looks like a prism they have to use so many colors, bailout Wall Street executives so they can continue to receive MASSIVE bonuses even though their crimes helped rob Americans from investments and equity in their own homes...check

Yeah, I see exactly what you mean.

I am convinced that the majority (2 out of 3) of American households are now getting some sort of Government check twice a month whether a subsidy, entitlement, or pension... Slice it dice it or justify it anyway you want but how many of these "fists raised in indignant anger because I've earned it" folks would walk away from these payoffs even though they are being provided by by a bankrupt Government printing monopoly greenbacks?

Doc, of course it's a Ponzi scheme because the funds have been pillaged/stolen for other programs plus I can't tell you how many non (and dual country) -citizens have qualified for entitlements and are even sustaining foreign governments with their ill begotten gains. Some of these folks actually reside abroad as widow/widower pensioners as well, even though they NEVER paid a dime into the program!!

Then there are folks retiring after just 20 years with the Government getting EARLY pension checks instead of being made to wait like the rest of us. Oh and the folks who have qualified as disabled because their unemployment comp has expired and there are no jobs. The well- to- do aged opportunists who qualify for unnecessary and almost frivolous SS retirement & Medicare because there is no "means testing" to weed them out, yada yada yada. The "legit" entitlement scams are never-ending.

One word of caution however, before folks throw rocks, they should step away from their glass houses.

Thank the Politican-Gods we don't live in the bad old days when people needed to make their own $, save their own $ for a rainy day, and provide for their own retirements.....with gold or a currency that would actually retain some purchasing power.

But hey, I've got this cool new plastic 4G phone gadget thingy.........so I've got that going for me.

If you have a 4G phone, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create that 4G phone which allows you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a 4G phone -- you didn’t make that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Albert Gore created the Internet so that you could look at porn on the Internet.

China manipulating their currency....Yep, I have to agree (but they learned it from the best...that would be US) Oh and by the way...we continue to do it through the Great Recession (something they/China has been whining about...screw them)

Russia...also agree to an extent but they were always artificially holding up the satellite countries economically so their current state more represents reality.

Don't get me started about Wall Street, but here unfortunately both parties are in bed with each other and the deregulation sponsored by Newt/Clinton back in the late nineties needs to be repealed in its entirety and most of the big banks need to be broken up. The idea of "too big to fail" needs to be removed from the lexicon.

Lastly, and I say this with a bit of trepidation, when someone says they "subscribe to Reality!", I shudder...the idea that any single person has that much information, that they have all the answers, that they can fix all the worlds ills, and that they alone have THE KNOWLEDGE of the world's situation is insulting and narcissistic. There are nearly 7 billion perspectives on this Earth and I doubt your brain can fathom them all...

I for one can provide a perspective and try to empathize with others...if I am successful at that, I consider it a good day 😣

I don't necessary, but empathy implies relationship rather than judgement and notice I said "try"...I don't assume that I know people's motivations as some others in this thread have alleged is even possible to do for millions of Americans, much less for one. The blame game may be an easy out...but it doesn't really solve anything in the end.

Calling them sociopaths (BTW Romney's Dad used to be on Welfare) is a "tad mean-spirited"....hmmm. Anyways, the actually percentage of the 47% that are on food stamps, Welfare, etc. is approximately 4% and while that still translates to millions of people, it isn't the hoards that are represented in the statements by Romney and his minions. Like I said, as long as we play the blame game, nothing gets solved.

Additionally, I personally have no real problem with corporate welfare as long as it is a part of an economic development strategy...not some political payoff scheme...most unfortunately are the later.
