what a silly little drama queen thing to say. pityful. I think Robert was saying we have a system of checks and balances in place to safeguard us. They were all triggered. I disagree with the decision, but it's not nazi germany and if you think it is remotely like that then you denigrate what happened there.

If you truly beleive that then there is no choice but armed revolution...... I disagree with your assessment.

Where in world did I ever say a thing about Nazi Germany, or even hint at revolution? Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing. With a few more years of practice, someday, you may even be able to master it.

BTW, your dog still looks ill, man. Need to get him to the vet.

Using my Way-Back machine, I recall a conversation with our pal Adroomi.
The issue was Bush listening to phone calls without warrant.

This was when 9/11 was still fresh and the fear of terror cells in the USA was a new topic at the water cooler.
At the time, I was in favor of the phone tapping. By all accounts, it was aimed at those who associated with known terrorists and at American citizens who frequently dealt with suspect regions (whether by travel or correspondence).

Adroomi claimed (he was a renowned liar of epic proportions) that he fit the profile since he was such a world traveler. I suggested that this was a minor inconvenience considering the stakes. We debated this in our usual friendly banter style I'm sure.

In any event, the new law under Bush had a purpose that didn't appear to extend (by intent) to encompass our major communications corporations.
People figured that if they called uncle Akmed or aunti zetuni (oops) in Saudi Arabia that they might not be speaking in private.

But nobody expected it to grow exponentially in scope.
And Obama literally promised that he would not engage in these tactics.

Yet here we are.
And nobody knew for sure this was happening until it was leaked.

How is this even remotely related to being a traitor?

I remember those days.

If I recall correctly, everyone was convinced that Adroomi was crazy for even thinking this sort of thing would ever be abused. ....

yeah...

I'm gonna say right now, for the record (and anyone with the time and boredom can look it up). I have ALWAYS argued against the patriot act on this damn board.

Seriously... how can you not expect the worst? The "patriot act"? You can't make anything sound more orwellian. The name is like one of those stereotypical bad guy with a waxed mustache trying to trick you into selling the farm by signing away your rights things.... Calling it "Extended Electronic Surveillance of Foreign and Domestic Communications" would have been more accurate AND less evil sounding.

Anyway. We're f-ed now. Bush created it, Obama seems to love the damn thing, congress isn't gonna get rid of something with "patriot" in the name, and at least 50% of the population is still scared enough of the boogeyman blowing up their high-risk targets back on the farm (the 4H corn silo... #2 on the Taliban's "to hit" list) that they don't want to lose it.

Screw this.. I'm gonna brush up on my russian and move somewhere with more freedom.

this whole website has been recorded somewhere.

Half the users are classified and tracked as possible communist agents.
The other half the users are classified as timothy mcveigh types, likely living in a compound in montana.

And that colonoscopy that you got last year... they didn't take the camera out.

And it's a pretty good bet that anything with the word "cuban" in an email or post through your internet provider got flagged...
Makes you wonder if the increase in individuals getting those nice letters instead of their overseas purchases is accidental.

Actually, Adroomi was the original drama queen. He was upset by how it affected HIM and used himself as an example of being victimized in order to spin more tales about how important he was. Again, the guy is a liar so we can never know how much of what he said was true. Fiction is fiction. Adroomi was the forum equivalent of the Da Vinci Code. People knew it was fiction, yet believed it anyway.

Back on subject, the goal of the Patriot Act was to catch the bad guy (funny how it's easy to simplify bills that were initiated by Bush, isn't it?).
The Patriot Act allowed for the good guys to wire tap the pesky A-rabs without waiting for a warrant.

At the time, there was no need to worry about the government spying on individual law abiding citizens because the government wasn't using the IRS to target political enemies. And they weren't confiscating our weapons en-mass. Nor did they want to own the auto industry nor the healthcare industry. And they hadn't yet deployed their weather machine.
So it wasn't that we "trusted" the governement. We just didn't think the American people would be so foolish as to rubber stamp the power transfer to Pennsylvania Avenue.

And now we are debating if this guy is a traitor. For revealing the evils for all to see, he should be celebrated.
He's not a hero, but he is certainly a Patriot.
