I think the article is saying that without the internet, trolls would start taking their sadistic personalities out on people in real life.

Kinda brings a new light to FGMs and whistles habits.

Thats why the idea of cbid assigned persona works out well. People act better in real life because they are given a role template to play.

To your other point, have you noticed that folks who are confined in real life, tend to let their hair down on the internet and acts like punks. As if releasing an inner juvenile that was never allowed to play as a child.

So, it begs to question. If you were to meet a person in real life, that was a troll to you on a web forum, without knowing that they were that person, would they be a completely different personality and would you not be as abrasive? Would you have a different view of them to start with if they were wearing their screen name(s) on a name tag versus their actual name?

I know that some of you would have a vest of name tags around here.

That's human nature. It's normal. Most folks avoid confrontation & put on their best persona when face to face, whether it be a herf or audience with the Pope.

I think we're waaaaay overthinking this.(deleted rest of post- not in mood to engage the enraged)

I think a lot of people here get a bit of "internet courage" and post views they hold, which they may be afraid to say to people they don't know too well in real life.

They throw on a screen name, and suddenly they're willing to expound on viewpoints they normally only admit to people who they know are of like mind.

This has an interesting end result...

On one hand, we know more about the nasty, brutish, little thoughts which go on in the heads of people on this forum than we do of people we interact with regularly. I kind of like that.

But, on the other hand, it certainly makes face to face meetings a challenge afterwards.

I find that hypocrisy repugnant. If you can't exchange as honestly via screen as you would in person or on the phone you are a worm.

Folks who have met me will attest to my being a "jerk-charmer" both here and in person.

What cracks me up are stories about guys who are loudmouth life of the party Sheckys on the internets and turn into head down Caspar Miilquetoasts when you meet them. For Pete sake!!! LOL At least TRY to maintain the Zorba persona...

I find it interesting that many people prefer internet interaction to real world interaction. While I can meet people over the internet I would not otherwise know I cannot imagine living my life without human interaction.
