Your instincts are good, Muddy, and if you stick around for a while you'll be sending out plenty of cigars. For now, though, just take your punishment, er, I mean, please accept our welcome.

In this particular thread, to be 'up' means to be the next one to receive smokes. Only one person is up at a time, and right now that person is you. When somebody else is up, you can be the one to send to them. This is a PiB, i.e. Pay it Back, so you first receive smokes, then you send them (and usually not to the person who sent smokes to you).

The next step here is for somebody to pick you up, i.e. send you smokes, and then they have a choice -- they can either say 'who wants to send me smokes?' or they can pass to somebody else. It is a bit of a tradition to bomb the fvck out of new guys -- I myself was in your position just a few months ago. While it may not be 1-to-1 right now, you can help do the same to the next unsuspecting newb who comes along, and it all evens out in the end, so don't worry about it.
