Soccer has not gained popularity in the US market for one simple reason... no TV time-outs. The countries where soccer is most popular have government provided television stations that are not dependent on commercial TV revenue, ie. BBC. In the US, the TV networks won't provide soccer because there is no revenue in it. The most revenue they can get is through a handful of commercials during halftime, which isn't nearly enough to produce the game. For any US sport to become popular it has to have a significant television presence. Any popular US sport has regular TV timeouts throughout the game - they would not get TV coverage without them.

I say this all regretfully because I love the game of soccer and would love to see more of it.

Funny, seems I've been watching BPL on NBC & Fox the last couple seasons. UEFA on Fox. French, Spanish & Italian leagues on BEIN. Don't watch MLS but see it all over ESPN.

Right, ask the average American what BEIN is, lol. They'll probably say that it's a side dish at a Mexican restaurant. Ask them where the French, Spanish & Italian UEFA leagues are found and what channel they are on, lol. Premier League is on yes, but it has been religated to Saturday morning at 7:00am cst... one game a week, for years!

Now in the last couple years there has been more coverage of Premier and other leagues, but even that pathetic amount of additional coverage has actually attributed to an increase in the popularity of the sport. If soccer received significant coverage, in prime time slots, on the same major networks that other major sports receive, it would explode in popularity.

There should be an ESPN station dedicated to discussions on WHY Americans don't watch soccer.

This is the World Cup and it's extremely entertaining.

But so is speed skating and the 100 meter dash once every 4 years.

If you like to watch soccer in between world cup action, you're in luck. There are cable packages that allow it.

Americans will like soccer when they like soccer.

Or they won't.

Meanwhile, you're free to like it if you so choose.

The question is: Why isn't that good enough?

You keep harping on that presumably because of one comment in here but other than that it's not an issue. The flirt is growing and will continue to grow. It's just a matter of time.

That's good enough for me. It's big in this town and many others and will only grow.

I am sorry you feel non soccer lovers are so persecuted and you feel the need to dwell on it. I disagree and think they are just fine snd can like it if not.

Meh. I didn't realize hockey or the nba had regular seasons but enjoy the playoffs.

Not hardly.

The "one comment" in here was indicative of all the talk elsewhere as well. It's like a disease. You don't see it because your a real fan of the sport. And that's OK.
