For fans of Irony, Germany plays against a team called the Desert Foxes tomorrow.

Holy crap.

That flop by Arjen Robben was epic.

And it cost Mexico the game.

Those guys played 90+ minutes in near 100 degree weather, and it all comes down to one "embellishment".

What a joke.

At a minimum he should have had a yellow at the 60 something minute mark.

Just saw it. It wasn't as bad as his earlier ones. At least his feet got clipped. If you allow them to play in the box that much you are playing with fire. It was a ticky tax foul but that's the way it goes.

Defenders can't react quick enough to Robben's jittery slashing running style. All they can do is stick a leg out and try to get a piece of him to slow him but not get enough to get called for the foul. Robben knows the foul is coming and makes sure the ref sees it. Sometimes the defenders get lucky, sometimes not. He couldn't let Robben dart right out in front of the net and got caught.

I hate flops too but I agree with HD. He is overly dramatic about it but that could legitimately be called a penalty......or legitimately not be called. It's the age old do you call it differently at the end of the game than at any other time or call it differently in the box than not in the box. It's the same in most sports like lebron and his theatrics or the holding call that could be called every play but isn't until the most opportune time.

Now earlier he had an obnoxious one that should have been carded between 60-70 min. If it had he may have been a little less dramatic on the last one but he still would have gone down and it still may have been called.

There doesn't seem to be huge outrage outside of Mexico. His foot did get clipped.

The Netherlands were dominating that game at the end. Anything could happen but it sure didn't feel like Mexico had much of a chance. They were fading and the Netherlands were relentlessly attacking. Seemed to me liked it was inevitable but you never know. And I do hate games in any sport decided by penalty. It drives me nuts in the nfl too.

There was contact, but he wasn't clipped.

I don't blame the ref. It happens very fast.

But the league could do more to stop it.

They could do more and should do more to stop the flops. Technically it was a penalty. One that often goes uncalled. It got called this time.

Sure would be nice to see an Algeria upset of the Germans.

(I hope the Polish and Czech military are on alert just in case such a freak event happens)

It took the Frenchmen 80 + minutes to wear the Nigerians down...not a good lead in to a match-up with Germany. Wonder if Deschamps will show some WWII footage to motivate his "troops?"

Doesn't Robben look like Captain Jean Luc Picard? Arjen spends almost as much time flying as the Captain of the USS Enterprise...

Like questionable pass interference calls in the endzone. **** happens. it sucks. But it was a penalty technically and there really hasn't been much bitching about it outside of mexico and folks that want it to be something horrible. I wish NBA players got a double penalty for flopping and NFL recievers got a penalty and loss of down for faking contact and whining for a flag on every play. And I wish soccer just enforced their card system for flops.

But I'm not that upset about this particular one. It was a ticky tack foul that was called. Without it he may well have scored. And it's only mexico.

I think I just saw Algeria called for a bad throw in. Hadn't seen that since grade school.
