Shaun - the story behind Belle Meade is very cool. Do you know if they've been granted a distilling license in TN yet or are they still having someone else do it based on their mashbill?

Also, how is it, flavor-wise?

Went to the state store for my rum yesterday, its been a few years since I picked up scotch so I decided to check out some more. Saw the prices, went "I can either get my cigars this check, or this scotch." Cigars it is.

Wife and her friend said "If you wait til Veterans day, we'll get you a bottle of 18 year."

So... looks like Im waiting until Veterans Day.

I don't know the entire story to belle meade, my mom actually brought this bottle back from her Tennessee vaca for me and the bro in law to split.

Kraken. I pick that up, and some Goslings Ginger Beer every other week so I can make my Dark and Stormy's that I enjoy.

It's an old brand brought back by the descendants of the original maker using the original mashbill (I need to work original into that sentence one more time). They had a hard time getting licensed and had to outsource to KY. I think the other TN distillers lobbied against them getting one, but can't recall for sure. I'm hoping they got it.

Im pretty sure its indiana whiskey from MGP and highly doubt license had anything to do with that decision.. Not that it cant be good, but there is no old family mashbil involvedl if thats the case. Im quite fond of mgp bourbons like old scout and willet.

You're right on Belle Meade, but there's more to the story:

Idk purely speculation on my part but im calling bull**** on reverse engineering a wheater mashbill from an old family ledger. They were an ndp because no one would invest enough for them to sell nothing while whiskey aged. Mgp did not make any whiskey following their mashbill, mgp makes its own mashbills. Every old whiskey brand thats reused finds some old family recipe or ancient heirloom mashbill. I suspect they got in with the guy from makers mark and are trying to ride the pappy van winkle wheater craze. Good on em, smart marketing. I like hype (cough orphan barrels)but idk about this one. Hope the whiskey doesnt suck. Has anyone had the belle meade 9yr wine cask finished one in the mean time? Ive heard its a good bargain substitute for willet xcf (altho the willet be high rye rye whiskey)

Wouldn't be surprised. With bourbon, the story is often more important than the product - even worse than cigars. I do think mgp does some contract distilling for some larger brands that aaren't mgp bills, though. I could be wrong on that - I've been out of the whiskey world for a few years (long, long story), and a lot has changed. Tons of new brands, the advent of Pappy(which, frankly seems extraordinarily silly to me, but if you have the money to throw around...)
