Trump is a one man wrecking ball with his tweets. think of all the crap that wouldn't be happening if he didn't tweet..

... this sort of fits under "if you're gonna do the crime you gotta be prepared to do the time"...

He posted inflammatory crap for attention anonymously. It got bigger than he anticipated however that was ALWAYS the risk, whether he knew it or not. Your boss could read your dumb azz posts at any point in time, just by dumb luck. Anyone you know may at any time run across your anonymous posts and put enough info together to figure out they know you in real life. This is just a difference in scale.

many doubt this is what happened in this case though... in fact, the more andrew went into how he tracked this guy down, the more unbelievable it was... general concensus among (not me) those in the know - andrew went to cnn's parent company and got ip addresses...

and I agree that anything you post anonymously is always in danger of being exposed... but how would you feel if fox news made a portfolio of every bad thing you'd ever posted online about anything - even things taken out of context - and gave it to your boss and your girlfriend and everyone else you know? for one, I know you'd sue the sh*t out of fox, that's for sure...

I am pretty sure I wouldn't have an issue with any of the publicly posted items released non anonymously. Unless there is something I've forgotten in the past I am pretty consistent about only posting using opinions and language which I would be comfortable having associated with my name. Additionally, I understand that my agreement with my IP provider doesn't guarantee my anonymity. If I want that I would use a VPN and proxy. If I happen to be doing something I don't want traced back to my name I have used this in the past. But even that pu ts you at the mercy of that providor.

Additionally, CNN did not take a portfolio of every bad thing this idiot said. They were talking about his name, not a collection of his online activity. Only what others could gather by searching a Reddit username... which he voluntarily made public by posting to Reddit under a consistent username. That was already public for anyone who wanted to accumulate it

Here's the likely scenario: CNN does research and discovers the source of the meme. CNN also learns that the source is the author of bigoted trash on his website. CNN doing its diligence, contacts the person to confirm the facts, and tells the dude they are doing a story about the origin of the Trump vs CNN video and will publish his identity and hometown and age, usual identifying details in stories such as this.

The dude, who is likely a family man who is a respected member of his community, has a great job with a company that needs the support of a diverse public, has a position at his church, and possibly has his eyes on a vacant city council seat, panics and arranges a deal with CNN. He offers to delete his website and never post anything like that again if CNN would PLEASE, PLEASE, not release his name.

I don't really know...but that is most likely what happened...

Nah he learns by arguing which is why he keeps moving the goalposts.

I'm sorry.

It is how I learn though. I rarely discount someone elses opinion even while arguing against it. The fence post thing is a badge of honor in here. While some in here think it's a virtue to stick to your opinion even when it's pretty well proven wrong, I'll change mine if you convince me.
