Right now....John McLaughlin.

Want to talk about versatility and depth of discography?

When Jimi Hendrix wanted a lesson or advice who did he go to?

I've been listening to a LOT of Peter Frampton and his solos are simply amazing. The entire song is reigned back and then the solo explodes with a sonic fury. Doesn't lose a step live either.

I saw John McLaughlin & The Mahavishnu Orchestra back in the 70's, the concert also featured Chick Corea and Return to Forever. That was wicked good Jazz Fusion.

Arguing about the the greatest guitarists is like arguing about who cooks the best grits. At the end of the day, their is a group of very talented musicians who though very different are very similar.

True, true but there’s another thread about “greatest” so maybe this post belongs there?

Everyone saying prince is underrated... I don't think that's true.

I think most people who know anything about music know how great he was.

Ya, he was a great one. I had his Tribute tab book when I was a teenager (I still got that old azz book).

Knew how to play a bunch of his songs at one point (even that song Dee).

Prince is respected by musicians, most passing music fans don’t give him a second glance. He shines live on guitar for sure, look no further then the my guitar gently weeps jam.

Kid was 16 when he played lead guitar for the Scorpions. UFO... McAuley Schenker Group... dude is an amazing talent, but an absolute douche from the stories told. Even his brother Rudy didn't want him in the band. Booted for Ulrich "Uli John" Roth and then Matthias Jabs. (another couple good'uns)

Have a listen to a 16 year old Mikey Schenker...

Scorpions first album. Kid starts grooving at the 3 min mark and just hammers it for the rest. If you listen their bassist Lothar Heimberg was badass, too.

Scorps were a favorite of mine in HS. I think half the world never heard of them until rock you like a hurricane hit the airwaves.

Richard and Linda...Sandy Denny too.

Hard to believe the same guy who was Fairport Convention (the band who birthed Steeleye Span) was also Shoot Out the Lights.

and then a few acoustic albums and on and on...

The dude did a lot of really dark disturbed songs.
