"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda"

Picked up the new (er) Grace Vanderwaal CD over the weekend (didn't realize she put out a full length CD last year, I only had her EP that they pushed out after she won Americas Got Talent).

Love her raw voice. CD is pretty good, although I think they jumped the shark on her sound a little. A little too poppy for her but oh well. Some songs sound like they are trying to make her into the new Shakira. Enough of her raw sound though to make it good.

Listened to this several times now.

I'm mixed on it. I like Jack White. He has one of the most distinct guitar tones of all-time and THAT'S saying a lot. He's not lazy and he's not afraid to take chances musically nor business wise either. He's earned the nickname "The Willy Wonka of Rock N Roll". He's been in several bands that all have something to offer a listener and I'm convinced he has ADHD. He refuses to stay in one spot musically...constantly shifting. His newest release to a casual listener will have them in amazement, but see...I've already heard Fishbone's "Chim Chim's Baddass Revenge", Frank Zappa's "Apostrophe" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Stand!". Why there's even some direct lineage to Fishbone on this album so I guess that's where the Funky overtones stem from. This isn't going to get airplay...at all. Most of Jack's music doesn't. That's okay as long as he doesn't pout and storm off and stops creating new versions of himself for a 10 year hiatus. My sincere wish is that he and Brendon Benson devote their time and energy to the Raconteurs. A band with real promise. One that delivers a solid punch. One that leaves you spellbound with wrapping your mind around what you heard or the lyrics crafted.

The gems from his newest for me are...



"Over and Over and Over" - for its gutsy Funkability



"Corporation" - for it's lyrics and groove.



"Respect Commander" - His guitar playing...pushing the envelope.


It doesn't come close to either Raconteurs' releases as a "total package" or tops them, but I can find the diamond in the rough...no matter how hard it hides!

also a fan, bust always felt frustrated listening to much of the White Stripes stuff, like he was holding back. Appreciated later offerings more, really like Raconteurs

Maybe thinking about two-person bands made me think of Dan Auerbach, but I have to read an article in today's Boston Globe about yet another new venture for him, Easy Eye Sound Revue.

He was on his way then. Anyone in Hamtramck in the early 90's KNEW they were the REAL DEAL. Holding court there and Royal Oak and then to the warehouse district in Detroit it was predestined that he was going to outgrow the White Stripes. I was pretty much Ground Zero for it. The band I was in opened for them...and was eventually asked to follow them because we could put 200 people of solid drinkers and followers in the crowd by ourselves. We weren't as lucky but still it happened. I fondly remember taking Jack out of key for his St. James Infirmary cover. I only knew Satchmo's version and would sing it in the wings to his disgust. It took him off his game. I used to laugh about it afterwards. I was invited backstage to meet up with him again in Orlando on the 1st Raconteurs tour after he spotted me in the crowd, he sent a roadie out but I was with unsavory "characters". He gave me a shrug, but we do need to hook up again. If the "Gods" allow it...I have a LOT to talk about with him. I'll call it as honest as I am. I wish him more than the success he has as he keeps on plodding through it all...Dead Weather...Solo...Raconteurs...doesn't matter...still this is what I think is him on his own at the top of his game...https://youtu.be/8xsF9fHdAfo

This is what Brendon...the Greenhornes and Jack do at their peak. I'm amazed at this every time I hear it.

Have to agree with Doc. The Raconteurs were the real deal. Though there is much to enjoy about the White Stripes. While Elephant was their biggest album I prefer Icky Thump. I have enjoyed his solo work. After listening to Boarding Room Reach I have to say I like it a lot. But that makes sense considering how much I like Icky Thump. What I really should do next is listen to The Dead Weather.

Listen to him shred on this. It's like a lazy Jimmy Page with no bass, vocalist or competent drummer! He was done with this experiment then.

Anthony "Brew" Brewster of Fishbone fame donated to the newest release...just sayin'...when you connect the dots...it's all there.

boarding room reach reviewed in this morning's Boston Globe...basically thrilled that White is looking to the future, not nodding to the past blah blah blah...but agreement with your assessment overall.
