Here is something to debate/consider. Does the term mildly racist make sense? I think something is racist or it is not racist. I think there are racist things that I find more or less offensive. I think many things are called racist that I do not find racist. I think there are different types of racism. So are we just jousting about semantics? Would it be fair to say you did not find Barrs tweet to be very offensive? I'm not trying to be clever here, I am trying to differentiate and understand better, and perhaps express myself better.

Speyside wrote:

As I have alluded above, I do think that it's worthy of discussion. Probably not going to happen on a widespread scale, however. The tag 'racist' is FAR too powerful to risk having it diminished through thoughtful conversation.

Hanging the racist tag is never going to be very scientific, because, IMO, the term depends entirely on intent and belief of the 'offending party'. Good luck judging that reliably.

As to how 'offended parties' feel....well, that's fraught with different challenges. There's certain times when legal distinction is attempted to be drawn using phrases like "reasonable person standard", etc. But, certain times and population segments may run up a hyper-sensitive standard and still be publicly validated.

So...trying to judge levels of racism in another person's actions is not likely to be a valuable exercise.
I think most people will argue that 'racism is bad'. But, I don't think I've ever met someone without some level of racial bias. How does that bias need to be manifested before it is called 'racism'? No clue. But, alleging 'racism' and defending 'racist' accusations are always going to be much more powerful actions than they deserve, IMO.

You really are a dolt. Monkey comments are not mildly racist. To bad there isn't a fountain of smart, you need a drink.

In my previous post I suggested that you not be stupid.
You obviously ignored my advice.

You can lead a horse to water...

Oops.
Sorry.
Is horse offensive?
I should have checked with you first.

If we're going to talk about racism can we right now just assume that we all know racism is bad? Because it gets boring when people have to side step over their point and put disclaimers throughout their post just so they can feel safe expressing themselves.

I think you are the inflexible one acting dumb. Really? Saying don't be so stupid is suggesting I am not stupid? I ignore bad advice, I expect you do the same. I am not offended, you obviously misunderstand. I disagree, is that so hard to follow? Carry on with whatever you think this is. I am sure you will agree with yourself.

I think so. I'm guessing the people who would disagree are openly racist (like skinheads or black supremacists) and fall outside of the 'reasonable person standard'.....

I have young relatives who have posted things on social media that I assumed were racist....but, it turns out maybe not so much....when a 15 y.o. lily white boy refers to his 'friends' as niggas....or pulls song and movie quotes out of their contexts and shares them, with intent to be inflammatory....who gets to permanently brand the kid as racist?....with or without any regard to race bias/intent?

It's funny.
A guy who can't follow straight forward sentence structure is so ready to define an ambiguous comment as pure racism with no wiggle room for anyone to put context to it.

You outdid yourself this time, skippy.

I think there can be degrees of racism: pulling the corners of ones eyes into a slant to mock an Asian pitcher after hitting a home run in a WS game pales in comparison to beating a man viciously, emasculating him and then hanging him naked from a tree because of his dark skin and some perceived violation of a social norm...

Merriam Webster defines the word racism as follows:

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.

It's my opinion that having personally held race-related beliefs is pretty normal. But to act on that belief crosses a line. Which sometimes just means opening up your big mouth.

Most of us grew up telling, accepting and laughing at racist and ethnic jokes. Was ok. Then. But times have changed. My 30 something kids wouldn't think these jokes are funny.

Of course there are differences between races and ethnicities. And why ignore them. Celebrate them as per the cliche.

Or shaddup...

Society is still playing catch-up ball. They'll get there. Maybe.

yah...Don Rickles and his schtick would not be popular today...nor would All in the Family...

All in The Family satirized those beliefs while painting Archie as a product of his environment.
He didn't (normally?) express hate, but did express his opinions on others as if they were common knowledge.

I get a kick out of it when cons wistfully point to this show...that was created and produced by liberals.

TG, look at the definition of racism in #151

Oxford living dictionary

Racist

A person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

Neither speaks of degrees. Something is racist or it is not. I do think Dave is right in that perspective is essential. I don't agree with Delta. In his example both acts were racist. One act was not criminal, the other was criminal.

There are shades of grey in that given the surrounding circumstance the same action may or may not be racist. There are no shades of grey in that there are different levels of racism, though there are different types of racism.

Barr's tweet was racist, no more no less. I have no intention of agreeing with you. Truth be told, we have different opinions. I don't agree with your logic, you don't agree with mine. I enjoyed trading insults with you for a while. Yours were quite good and funny.

I'm not sure that attitudes about race have changed much...and whether PC/taboos about racist expressions have improved racial relations.

Instead of having a release valve, where a racist can laugh at different people in the privacy of their own homes decades ago, and observe socially correct civil behavior in public, we now have entitled racists calling the police on people going about their lives, doing normal things in "places where they don't belong"...Starbucks, public park, stairwell of a dorm on campus, etc...

wonder if this author is onto something...
