but my closest friend from college loved that city. He eventually lived there for a lot of years, and when I was living in Madison I'd head down to visit a lot. Heck, I even spent a summer interning at a pharma company in the outskirts of chicago.

But I found it combined the worst attitudes of the rural midwest with the ego of a city like NYC.

I still remember my friend relating to me how this girl would refer to some beltway as the N-word 500 because it ran through the black area or something.... and another friend didn't think that was a deal breaker on dating her. The idea that they could find that somewhat normal gave me a real bad taste in my mouth.

The guy who ended up dating her? Yeah, he didn't seem to think it was a big deal. But I never saw him again. I think my friend stayed in contact with him, but I don't know.
