The sad part is... the people rioting and looting are going to think he was arrested because of their idiotic actions, when in fact the department/FBI first gathered all the evidence and statements and made the (correct, IMO) decision to arrest him.

As I said... there was no reason to stay on him like that after he was restrained with handcuffs. None. People don't realize that the good cops hate the bad cops, too. I can tell you in my 13 years we released people off probation for cause (poor decision making, etc), fired those that broke the law, prosecuted and jailed some, and punished some with "hours". Not, 'you're off for 40 hours'... but your dumb ass is working at a reduced wage until you pay for 40 hours. Max hours is 160.

Nobody hears that. Nobody sees that. They see this... the worst thing that can happen. They think cops do dumb stuff and get away with it. The vast majority of the time, they do not. They are found out, punished, fired, or prosecuted.

I would imagine the officers who were there that did nothing to intervene are going to get some form of punishment, as well they should.

It's hard to have too much sympathy there MACS. You want people to know about cops being found out, punished etc... but the video shows 4 cops, 100% of whom did something wrong (1 appears to have killed someone, and 3 did absolutely nothing). There was no attempt to stop it from even one of the cops.

The guy had 18 "complaints" against himself... I'm guessing that means there is some bureaucracy in place that kept him in place and on the street. That same bureaucracy didn't seem to have anyone in it that tried "finding out, punishing etc".

Hell apparently Klobuchar declined to prosecute him years ago. Which really implies people knew there were problems with him and didn't do anything.

I'm sure unions have a lot to do with this, but its a really bad look to try to pretend that "the vast majority of the time" cops are not getting away with stuff. In fact, it seems to escalate inside the system until they get caught on videotape and the public sees it. Then they actually get punished.

Sorry MACS we’ll have to disagree a bit on this one.

I’ve seen first hand numerous cops keep their mouthed shut and lie when their co cop did what they know is wrong. The lies proved they knew it.

I’ve also spoken with cops who admit the above and justify it. Culture isn’t onsie twosie. It’s larger than that.

We agree the bad cops taint the good cops but too often the good cops do nothing. And I get it. It would be hard. But then they are bad too in my mind.

The cop should have been arrested on day 1 like I would have. The gap isn’t a luxury most of us get. In this instance it didn’t work due to video but it’s often used to get stories straight.

The rioters do nothing more than allow folks to focus on that rather than the murdering cop, the other two that were also on the dude and the cowardly POS that kept folks away.

Oops. Hit post too soon. On phone don’t want to edit.

There were three cops sitting on that man and one trying to keep folks away. All deserve time and you can’t convince me these are the only 4 bad apples. They were simply doing what is accepted in their culture. This isn’t their first rodeo and I’m sure their peers are shocked just shocked. Gambling? In this joint.

The term I heard before is "if you have 10 bad cops, and 1000 cops keeping quiet about it, you have 1010 bad cops"... or something like that

That’s not to say macs experience isn’t accurate in his situation. I have no idea the reputation of his team.

But kcmo, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, st Louis, etc. not so much. Dirty to the core.

Tee - You claim superior knowledge on the covid because you're in da bidness. I'm doing so here. My experience, working in the bidness is much, much more extensive than yours. You have a small sample from which to draw.

I have a yuge sample. 13 years worth, plus 14 more as an MP.

Victor - many punishments, firings, arrests and prosecutions happen and nobody hears a peep. Our sheriff publishes the investigations when they're over. Public never knows a thing until he puts it on the "transparency" part of the Sheriff's web page.

And to add - I'm not really up for arguing or debating the issue. We all have our opinions and our reasons for those opinions and that's fine. We can agree to disagree and carry on smartly.

Macs I believe you. Did earlier. I think that is your experience. I don’t think you prolly have much experience in the areas I mentioned though. Kcmo is rotten to the Core despite what your area may be. And I’m sure Atlanta is different than KC etc.

As for covid you still don’t believe me lol. And it’s one thing that’s the same or similar if it mutates in all areas.

Hey, my experience with police has been nothing but great.

but I'm lilly white, as you know.

I can't speak to any one police force. And since it's all theoretical when you start talking about "most of them x".... then anecdotes are meaningless.

I can say the only times I've had really questionable interactions with the police have been when I've been with friends who were black. But again... those were anecdotes. I've also had interactions with police officers where they were very polite and understanding to black friends. .... anecdotes.... and likely all boils down to the individual officer.

But you have to remember what the public sees. They see a guy get murdered on video, with 3 other police officers doing nothing. When the killing is done, they do not apprehend the suspect at all. He goes back to work. On the street. This isn't the first time this has been videoed happening... and we know that if you video something happening, odds are there are times that it happens when no one's got a camera on (or the bodycams happen to "malfunction")... again, no one knows what percentage of times it happens statistically.... all we have is a collection of anecdotes that suggest a larger number of incidents.

The other thing to think about is the "punishments". And I know you don't give a fuxk about this, hell, you're retired. But members of the community aren't going to care if the guy who just did something that violated their rights is assigned another 40 hours of work at minimum pay. They know he'll probably be doing that work even more angry, and is more likely to do something worse. They want him off the force, not angrier at the public but still armed.

But you are correct. No one has visibility to the times that officers are fired for these offenses, when it's handled internally. Perhaps making that more public would go a long way to restoring some confidence.

Glad you’re ok with lunch mob justice Vic.

The thing about due process is everyone deserves it, in this case the public too. That’s how you show the system works.

I’m not a big fan of them blasting his face on the news when people are showing their worst side. The mayors words worsened the situation.
