Back yard in one my houses we had a nice shade tree over the patio. Silver Maple or something like that, if I remember correctly. Fast growing tree for a tree. Very branchy (lack of a better word) and needed pruning to keep lower limbs from intruding on the patio and maintain head room. It was great to climb. Problem was, it was kinda softwood and because it was branchy (that word again) pretty knotty... was always a risk of snapping limbs off in heavy wet snow.
I wanted to cut it down on my terms in a controlled fashion and before a storm would take it down on it's terms. If it went down from a storm it likely would take out the stockade fence next to it. I never did take it down, I liked the shade that it cast over the patio. The pruned limbs fed the fire for the fire pit where many marshmallows turned into smores for the kids and warmed the backyard patio for cigars after the sun went down.
Kinda miss that little old house. I wonder if the tree still stands.
