Bought my oldest daughter her 1st car, a used Honda. Within a few weeks she went joy riding with friends and rolled it on a dirt road. No one injured other than bumps and bruises cept' my pocket book.#-o

Bought my younger daughter a used Plymouth. She drove like a little old lady knowing daddy was not about to buy her another.

As I recall, our deal with the kid was we paid 1/3rd of the cost of the car and the insurance. Boosted our end of the insurance as long as he remained above a 3.0 GPA.

He got into an accident which was his fault. He was responsible for the full deductible and any increase in premium as a result of the crash.

Since that point, he calls himself an old lady driver. Five over the limit- sure. Says he rarely gets to 10 over.

Much smarter than I was (am).

Yeah, when he bought the first one the deal was he comes up with 1/3, I come up with 1/3, and the ex-wife comes up with 1/3. He pays 100% the insurance. For this replacement car we'll start with whatever the insurance company is going to give him for the crashed car plus what he has in savings then negotiate additional outside funding from there.

I won't play the Frank & Drafter card for any dept collection. Maybe just Frank since he's more local than Drafter and could play the "good cop" role and we hold Drafter (the bad cop) in the wings if needed.

My son has been doing a co-op job this past semester (alternate weeks of school and working co-op). 80 hrs/month making $19/hr doing welding and stuff so he has some money socked away from that.

He's typically a safe driver (doesn't text and drive, only hands-free cell calls) but does push the speed limit a bit. He got pinged for that a couple months ago but the cop was nice and only gave him a $25 ticket. This accident he just wasn't paying attention and luckily it was a low speed collision. The air bags didn't even go off. Talked to him on the phone while he was waiting for the tow truck and he was rattled a bit so hopefully it's a lesson learned to be more aware of his surroundings.

Odds are that 98.2% of new drivers will get into an accident within the first couple of years of driving - this is a fact with C-bid statistics of 98.2% certainty. It's part of the leaning/growing up process and luckily (hopefully) the lesson learned only costs him money and inconvenience rather than injuries (or worse) to either him or the other party.

Prolly test drive a couple cars this weekend (eyeing a Toyota Corolla) that I see at the used car dude's lot. Last weekend he has a couple Hondas too that he bought at auction that might be of interest but he hasn't put them out on the lot yet.

On another note: T minus three days until I end my emplyment at the circus.

Good morning everyone.

Looking at a couple Toyota's that a local reputable used car place has on their lot. Although I'm a Ford fan, it's hard to beat or deny the dependability and reliability of most Toyota products.

Also would recommend a Toyota. Currently have a 2003 Camry with 250,000 and a 1997 4runner with 350,000. No issues from either. Also got in two hit-and-runs in the 4runner which seemed to leave significant damage to their vehicles and I got away with nothing more than a baseball sized dent. The 4Runners are absolute tanks (which almost justifies the 13 mpg)

Morning, peoples.

I agree generally on the Toyota front. Though I am still bitter that an electrical/computer gremlin forced us out of our Rav4 at a mere 98k miles.

You guys are nice. I gave my son a hand me down 1995 Nissan Pickup. Then he gave it back to us and he got a hand me down 2002 Honda Civic. When that reached 250k miles and started leaking oil from the main seal we traded it for a 2011 Nissan Versa and chipped in our tax return to sweeten the down payment. He paid the loan... he paid insurance.

My son will be in school for two more years so I am still paying for his car, auto insurance and phone north of $400/month.

Good morning!

85F/59F.

Going to the lap pool, then finishing up on some household business all day.

Landscaper only put down like 1" of mulch in the front yard beds and that is not quite enough. Picked up four bags of pine bark mulch and will probably spread it out to make the beds look better, cut down on weeds and hold moisture.

Planning a 40 year reunion of my fraternity pledge class (Fall '83). Haven't seen some of the guys in like 40 years!!!
