All good with us. Appreciate the concern.

The fires on Oahu are in the Central and West areas. We’re more North / Northeast, so in general, our area is much wetter / greener. Luckily too, the Ko’olau Mountains separate us from the areas prone to wildfires.

The fires on Maui have been bad. The winds from Hurricane Dora are fueling 3 areas and smoke has been covering most of the island. All schools, except in Hana, are closed. The fire and smoke has shutdown all roads going into Lahaina. Travel to Maui is highly discouraged. The Big Island is also experiencing high winds and fires but not as bad as Maui.

Home from camping. Tent camping with family kinda sucked. No big deal solo, but wasn't our thing. Kid loved it though, so that made up my mind. We can buy a small camper that fits for wife and me and boy said he'd be happy to have his own tent.

I think the biggest downside is no bathroom. Sure there's facilities at the campground, but it's not convenient especially in the middle of the night. The next one, equally important is the noise. Again, solo camping at the racetrack this don't bother me much. But wife said she couldn't get any sleep and every time I woke up I had to be cognizant not to flop around on the air mattress and wake her. Lights from passing cars and flashlights go right through the tent too. Also all the raccoons scurrying along the sides of the tent got the dogs riled up all night. Boy said he "slept better than at home".

So without the boy in the camper, our choices are much better. I'd been pretty set on a hybrid camper which is a normal hardside camper but the beds fold/slide out like a popup camper. But after seeing how much the noise woke both of us up, canvas sided beds aren't gonna work.

Sorry to read danm. My idea 💡 of camping 🏕 is checking in the Motel. 🤔

Yeah... an RV with AC/heat, a bathroom and shower, a kitchen and a bedroom and stuff. Or a cabin... with all the aforementioned amenities.

We rented one during August 2020 and went to way northern California for a week. (It was actually illegal for them to rent it to us due to Covid lockdowns.)

92, sunny... hot and humid.

75 degrees in my recliner.

All my chores for the day are done. Walked the dog, went to the gym, got a few groceries at the commissary and got a haircut while I was on the base.

It's 89 going to 104 here today and that feels like a pretty nice change from the 30+ days of 110-117 we just went through.

20 mile bike ride with wife and boy. Time for a new bike. I bought mine in 1997 for $300. Fixed a few things over the years but at this point I don't think any of the components are salvageable. Bearings are all crunchy and coasting feels like light braking. Hubs and crank barrel were hot at the end and they were freshly greased in the spring. I got every bit of life out of that bike. Had 12k miles on the odometer before that broke sometime around 05-06 when I was commuting with it.

Brother in law is service manager at local trek store so I stopped to bother him on the sales floor. They have two bikes under $1k that would work for me. Gotta sell my beater first, then I'll go pick up a new bike.

Cool thing happened while we were riding back from Gary we stopped in downtown Griffith where there's a huge train intersection and some old train cars - 2 caboose and a Pullman troop carrier along with an old switch tower and train depot. An older guy came up and asked if we'd ever been inside. Nope. Been stopping there for the train loving boy since he was in a bike carrier. He opened all the cars and the buildings and gave us a tour. It was so cool to see, I love old stuff like that. We got to sit up in the top cupola of the caboose and watch a couple trains go by. They have a livestream camera on the tower too https://www.youtube.com/live/YMGLorDhw0w?feature=share

Had a great day. Tomorrow I've gotta help dig in a crawlspace all day. At night taking boy to the fair for demolition derby.

1k for a Trek you gotta pedal?

F that... for just a shade under $1200 I got a Lectric E-bike with cargo baskets and the upgraded battery. I pedal if and when I want to (with pedal assist)... and turn the throttle when I don't. Pedal assist 1-5 and at 3 I am pedaling lightly and doing 16-17 mph.

danm I have just the bike for you. I'm considering selling my Masi Gran Criterium from 1982 which is in mint condition and has less than 1000 miles on it. Only used it to complete the Tour de Tucson and the Arizona Challenge back in the day.

The frame set was hand made in Italy (the newer ones are machine made in California) and it has the best Capagnolo components. I dropped by a bike shop to ask their advice and said I thought about $1500 would be a good price. The guys told me that these are now collectors items and worth much more.

Went on Ebay and saw a couple going for $2250 - $2900. How about a bike that appreciates instead of depreciates?
