I never had an old school power car. When I was young, a neighbor down the street would buy muscle cars , rebuild them and sell them. Ford Mustangs (he had s really nice Mustang), Chevy stuff, He also did family cars like AMC Pacer and Eagle for family stuff....

Back in my late high school /early college days I bought a used Ford Maverick with a straight six out of the want adds (want adds... do they even exist any more?}. It probably cost me about $500. Reliable car for about 3 years until the heater core failed. Never had major issues with it. It always started even on the coldest of days. No engine problems or drive train problems. It was a good car for my needs but if the heater core craps out and if you live in northern Wisconsin... you kinda need a working heat in the car. Sold it to the car salvage place for like $150.

Bought a used Datsun after that. Probably another $500 from the want ads. After that was retired I went with a motorcycle.

Back in the day $500 was big money for a want ad used car. Today, $500 a month is a low ball a grocery budget.

Had a 55 chevy with the 265 cu V8 three on the tree in high school. The car had been beat on pretty hard by the time I got it. Looked good from a distance but rarely was reliable. I think I thumbed my was to school more days than I drove it.

I was so used to hitch hiking that one time I got it running and drove it to school and when class was over I thumbed home.

No muscle cars, I had a 1952 MG TD I bought from a family guy who was restoring the car, but didn't have the time. It was in pieces, the short block was done and he had run new wires, only a few were terminated in an unlabeled socket under the dash. The wires, all white insulation, had no identification tags. I had to figure out and finish the wiring and assemble the engine, then install the body parts, but I got it running.

I had a problem getting the engine to run, I had not adjusted the lifter arms. I took it to a local foreign car garage, the owner/mechanic figured it out, liked what I had done, and offered me a job.

I drove the crap out of that car on mountain roads, glad I survived.

I saw him play that on the “Against the Wind” tour. He was in a harness hanging off the front of our section in the balcony, right over the seats on the floor. So cool

Still one of my favorite concerts…. And I went to ALOT..

Hindsight is 20/20 but imagine if you had kept that car. These days some rich azz buyer would pay you an obscene amount of money for it.

And yes, I realize there would have been costs and sweat to move it around from home to home or storage facilities but I’mma sure you would have recovered those expenses and then some.

Probably why I took a job as a dam operator living in the mountains without many neighbors, and, I was about to get married so I had to think responsibly, at least somewhat.

According to my old boss, whose 6x great grandfather was a Scottish seaman, Scots are tight-azz people…and judging how my boss paid everyone in the company, he certainly fit that description. 🤦
