written in1900 by James and John Johnson for a school event. James was the principal of Jacksonville, Florida’s segregated Stanton School, the Johnsons mailed the manuscript to their publisher in New York, requesting mimeographed copies for use by their students. Over the following weeks the brothers taught the Stanton School’s chorus their new “song.” And on February 12, 1900 they gave the first performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing!”

A few months later their publisher printed the work as “The National Negro Hymn.” it spread across the South orally. By 1910 “Lift Every Voice” was generally known around the country. In 1919 the N.A.A.C.P. (of which James Johnson was a founder) adopted it as the organization’s official anthem. It became a rallying cry against the realities of lynching, segregation and discrimination at the time, and later used during the Civil Rights Movement.

I think it's divisive. We ARE one nation. Black history IS American history. To have separate this or that is not inclusive AT ALL, it's divisive.

Device huh? Like segregation? That thing that was in full swing when BOTH anthems were adopted? Maybe people of color assumed like water fountains, bathrooms, restaurants and other things in the country at the time, they needed a different anthem… you know, so some white dudes wouldn’t hang them from a tree for using the “white” anthem…

a melting pot is made up of numerous ingredients that blend into one nation...Shawn is correct on that part.

not every bite tastes the same. You might be a piece of gristle but you are still part of the entirety.

National Anthem is supposed to be the anthem for America.
If we are going to make race anthems, let’s make sure there is an anthem for every race and every combination of races.
Start with black, white, asian, hispanic, native american, pacific islander, until all are represented. Then thinly slice based, religions, sexual preferences, carnivore, vegetarian, vegan, each individual food allergy, lactose and other intolerences, and those that are all tolerant, eating disorders (one for each disorder), another based on those who are fat, short, skinny, tall, average, one for mainly water drinkers and the sub genres of tap water, bottled water, water in metal containers o0-5.9 ounces, another for each six ounce increment up until toxic levels of water, including an anthem for those who drink toxic water, an anthem for people who don’t drink toxic water, one for the people of east palestine ohio, one naturalized palestinian, illegal palestinian, secular, observant, orthodox non orthodox jews, soda, one for each country and sub division of each ethnic group in each country, water drinkers, juice drinkers for all of the fruit juices, nor fruit juices, dehydrated juices, fruit juices which identify as waters, waters that identify as juices and those juices, waters and any other liquid that is ….. trans fluid.

Get to work!

And I STILL don’t think we should bomb Ian. Maybe we mine their harbors.

It's lyrics are not divisive but seem hopeful about the future building toward being treated equally.
After all, it was written barely two generations after the Civil War.
But I understand what you are saying, just don't agree it was intended as a separate but equal kinda us/them song by the writers.at the time.

the Blacks in America at the time this was written were not the progeny of people who came because they wanted and in fact, though "free", were routinely excluded for pretty much another century (from the writing of the poem) from such things as mortgages, pensions, voting, career opportunity, etc etc...the stuff that drew others (my family included).

Others decided they were different, lesser. Not you and me, not just politicians...and certainly we should not blame the victims either.
