Upon reflection and consultation with my research assistant (Google), I think lie was correct. "Lay" is a transitive verb and requires an object. I laid it down. It was lying there.

I think.

Based upon my looking into it, I think SOB had it right in the first place. It would seem (to my feeble brain) that it would depend upon the construct of the sentence.

To further confuse, I referred to Grammarly. Speaking of things like direct objects it would seem the address is such. However, there is an example later in their post about leaving dirty clothes lying around the house. Why aren't they laying around the house?
