I didn't taste the sauce before pouring it atop the chicken. It is a richer sweeter flavor than regular teriyaki, but not too sweet for my tastes. I imagine that the charring from the grilling/cooking converts some of the sweetness to a charred flavor.
I've been trying to match the flavor of a terrific teriyaki burger from a long gone burger joint operated by a Japanese family near my high school back in the day... but have never been able to find a teriyaki sauce that held up. It was deliciously simple: bun, big patty, lettuce, raw onion, tomato, thin slather of mayo and the thick teriyaki sauce...
