If you are in the ryobi battery system, they have a one-handed reciprocating saw that, with a pruning blade, works well on ~4-5 inch limbs. I have taken quite a few off that way and I feel much safer than with a chain saw (I looked at one like you are describing). Plus, I can easily throw it in a duffel bag with some rope, bags, duct tape, etc... Wait, I said too much.
