I was all set for the greatest experience yet, finally withdrawing one of my two Opus X from deep within my humidor -- my first. Why I chose the 3rd presidential debate as the occasion I don't know (but maybe it explains my disappointment). THIS CIGAR DIDN'T DO ANYTHING for me! Do I need a taste-bud transplant? It looked perfect but was far from that on taste IMDO (in my distorted opinion). Let me step back though, before committing my total act of blasphemy....The Opus may have been over-humidified; the weekend before, I was fortunate to have Timinator visit for the Nebraska/Texas Tech slaughter. On Sunday we hit a local cigar-friendly club to watch the Cowboys/Giants game. I actually chose THAT occasion to light up my O-X. It just wouldn't stay lit at all! I carefully clipped off the burned portion, blew through it and later left it out of my humidor in a partially-opened baggy for the few days before the debate. On try #2, after what I thought was enough time to dry, I still had to relight at least 5 times. Burn was a little uneven, too. MY BIG QUESTION: Can too much humidity foul up the taste of an otherwise great cigar? I know, of course, it can affect burn and ability to stay lit, but taste?? By the way, on try #2, I don't think the taste was really affected from being re-lit; it tasted the same as it did Sunday. Help! What's the prescription? (I know the answer is NOT to send one of you my last one for examination!) Maybe this is GOOD news for me -- maybe I just have price-conscious taste buds. I had a Mayorga maduro next that was EXCELLENT, and at about 1/5 the price.

well an over humified cigar in my opinion can taste sour. Like bad milk.....buy a hydrometer...save your cigars and your taste buds.....I like a Don Carlos over any opus x myself....about 8 to 10 buck for a nice rubosto...give that a try.

If that subject box is not a loaded question I don't know what is. Reminds me of a pitch in softball. Anywho…to me it sounds like you answered your own question CL. Some times the answer is no deeper than “you simply didn’t like it” I understand your concern knowing the attention this cigar label brings. I often find myself thinking a “good” cigar should taste good to everyone. Just not so. ( as you can read by my notes on Tamboril….although that cigar does not qualify as good period ) Over humidification can affect taste but not to level at which you describe. Sorry you had a bad experience the Opus X. I find the cigars to enjoyable although you’re right, way too pricey.

My philosopy about OpusX is this, they are good to go fresh out of the box. A fresh box. These are strong smokes,to me. I prefer the smaller sizes; Fuente Fuente about a 38X5" or a petite belicosa 42X4.5". I can assure you this is a great smoke by most standards. Beware, they get much stronger with age. My biggest complaint with them is uneven burn and the bad glue job sticking to the rosado wrapper and pulling off a plug when removing it. They have very wide bands. Probably 1/3 the length of these smaller sizes and I smoke these puppies to a nub. The hallmark of a truly good cigar. Good to the last puff. You get a fresh Opus X and don't save it, smoke it! It is a badmammyjammy!

I have been saying for some time that the Mayorga line is a real sleeper that has big taste with 1/3 the price! A great cigar, so great in my opinion that it replaced my Cohiba Lonsdale's of choice. Any line of Mayorga is exceptional in my opinion!

I read your post, Heg, on the Yahoo club. I was glad to see I'm not the only one that didn't have a big "O" when smoking this cigar. Mine was a good-sized cigar, the Perfecxion #2, I think 6-1/2 x 52. I'm sure my 2nd will be better if I better regulate the humidity, but I don't see it dramatically changing. Like Mtsheron, I'll stick to my Mayorgas and other similar "cheaper" cigars. Thanks, guys; I'm feeling better now. I guess I should be glad. I'd hate to think I have to spend that kind of money if I really want to experience my absolute favorite and just settle for 2nd best at other times. If you like the Mayorgas (maduro, right?) then try the La Luna Maduro Fuertes -- also good flavor and smooth. Another of my maduro favorites -- although pricier -- is the Macanudo maduro. I got 'em here at c-bid for much less money than the local tobacconist.

You may not notice the taste of a re-lite cigar but I sure do... I think that has a big effect on any cigar as well as to much humidification...

I think the problem was that it was re-lit once or twice. It had time to marinate in stale smoke.

IMO, relighting is the worst thing you can do. I know that sometimes it can't be avoided, but it really impairs the taste. It can make a fine cigar taste like a dogrocket.
