OK, I told the darn dog to stop smoking my cigars, but would he listen? Noooooo. So, this is what he gets.

Actually, he wouldn't stop licking a cut on his foot. We tried the Cone (aka Elizabethian Collar), but he laid waste to the house with it. So, we had to use a muzzle. He's actually the friendliest dog you'll ever meet. Just a big 90 lb baby.

We have three Pits and an American Rottweiler. None of them are even slightly aggressive or we wouldn't have them. We have two small children in the house and two cats. The dogs are quite protective of the kids (in a good way) - in old England, pit bulls were known as the Nanny Dog, because they watched children when their parents were away.

Like any breed, Pits can be trained to be aggressive - their physical makeup makes them especially suited to the task, and like all terriers, once they're into something, they won't stop. However, if given love and trained to be good pets, they're great at that too.

OK, that was my plug for the breed. Now, back to cigars!

Egruff: Beautiful dog! My only concern with Pit's is (from what I repeatedly read) they are unpredictable (as evidenced by numerous accounts/incidents of unprovoked maulings by dogs whose owners swear up and down that the dogs are good, decent, harmless dogs, who won't/don't attack unless provoked). Hard to convince the families of the small innocent children who are the recipients of the dogs attention that they're good dogs.

While I'm sure your dogs are well trained, mannered, and behaved, I sincerely hope you take all extraordinary steps to keep your kids safe.

That's true in the wild Rick. But dogs can lick open stitches, lick away scabs and reopen wounds, lick away medicine and pull out drains.

Wild dogs, or those who act as their own vet...don't live very long.

He was just following his instincts, but little does he know. He will be much better in the long run and will love you just the same. Love animals!

I dunno from pits but they sure get some bad PR. The most vicious dogs I've known were a couple semi-wild Dalmations. They about disembouled my Lab puppy who they had known for a long time.

Dalmations are known for going nuts. We had one as a kid that decided he needed to bite everyone.
Dad took him to the vet. Vet said it would be $60 to put him down. So Dad took him out and gave him his own shot.

My brother has given "lead poisoning" to several dogs; once they go nuts; nothing you can do really. Junk yards don't want them any more.

Yep, the Buddyman is a pit bull. He's about the nicest dog I've every owned, and I've had several different breeds. The only problem is he loves to jump up and give kisses and his head is about the size of a bowling ball, only harder. My jaw has a few cracks from his head. Funny though, around the kids, he never does that. He is very careful - makes me think that the "accidental" contact with me isn't!

My good friend had a very nice pitbull too.....until it ripped the head off his cocker spaniel.
