Hae you calibrated your hygrometer?

If so ... don't worry about it. Between 65% and 70% is right were it should be ...

I recently started using it in one of my larger humidors and have the exact same problem now. It stays right at 65% and will go no higher. I even rechecked my hygrometer and it was right on the money with the salt test so I don't know....

Folks ... the PG mixture is doing what it's supposed to do!

Just remember ... most low-end hygrometers are not the most accurate instruments around, you know ...

Most larger humidors need two or more humidifiers ... or at least a fairly large one.

I used to think my humis were running around 80%. Did the salt test to my analogs and find they were within 1 or 2%. Bought a digital that claims to be factory calibrated and not requiring any salt test. Calibrated my analogs to it and had to drop them all around 10%. Put the digital in my coolerdor with a large home-made credo with 50/50. It has been steady at about 70-71% after months. My analogs are also now steady at around 70%.

I ran those analogs at 80% for several years with no mold or burn problems to speak of. Salt test showed they were correct, digital said they were high. I'm trusting the new digital and the 50/50.

Follow up...

Forgot to mention that the company that makes my Digital claims calibration to +/- 1%. Seems to jive with what everyone says about 50/50.

If you really want to get closer to 70%, try using straight distilled water - don't continuosly use PG.
But I agree that 66% is fine, and actually prefer 65 to 67%
As an aside, regarding analog hygros, I've had two that never worked properly, and another that worked but was overly sensitive to movement. I've since switched to digitals.

Thanks for your help friends. I am using a new Csonka digital I recently purchased. It registered at 71% in the salt test, so I am sure the hyg is good, I was just wondering if I needed a larger humidifier. But if 65 to 70 is good.... then all is good in humi-world.

Ron, Are you using pre-mixed PG or mix your own,I live in PHX and the pharmacies I have tried say theres no medical use and don't carry it.

any pharmacy should be able to order it for you. They may not necessarily care the product, because its mainly used for "compounding" or "mixing" drugs, which is very uncommon in today's pharmacy. Call a pharmacy that does compounding because they should have it on hand. How do I know, i work in a pharmacy. Should run you no more than 9 bucks for 480ml bottle

You can buy PG in bulk quantities at a very affordable price at various online chemical sellers. I get mine at www.chemistryshop.com.

I have two large rectangular shaped humidifiers in that humidor. I'm sure you've seen the type I'm referring to.
Also, I realize 65% is fine, but this humidor is the one I use for long term storage/aging and I would prefer it to be at 70%. My daily use humidors are kept at 65% anyway. I think they smoke better at that level.

As for the polypropylene glycol, you are most likely going to find it at the smaller independent pharmacies. The larger chains and the ones in the grocery stores will seldom carry it.

Had to ORDER my PG from longs BTW.

I've heard it's better to keep your long term storage sticks at a lower humidity like 65%.

i have one beautiful humidor, it looks like a minature clothes closet. the kind that used to be popular in europe. heavy looking with fancy scroll work. it won't let the humidity go past 60. i put a small dish with distilled water in addition to the humidifier and now it will keep the humidity up.

(note to self about dish of water on bedroom night stand re keep it up.)

Sorry about the late reply. I could not find the PG anywhere in town either. I concur, the chemistry store is where I got mine. With shipping, $30.00 a gallon.
Note to self: don't try to save gasoline by modifying car to run on PG.
