I discovered that the torch lighters have a limit on their adjustment pre-set by the factory, and after you re-fill them the first time, somehow the flame just isn't as big anymore. I took the screw out of the bottom that holds the housing on, and removed the housing exposing the tank and the flame adjustment screw. The screw has a tiny rubber gasket on it. Remove the gasket carefully (you're going to put it back on), and you will see a brass or steel ring that is fitting over the adjustment screw and is slotted so that it turns with the screw. This ring has a stop on it so that it hits against the plastic around the adjustment screw and keeps it from turning past the factory pre-set limit. Lift off this ring with a jewelers screwdriver (need one to get this far acturally) and you can extend the limit range of the flame adjuster. Play with the adjustment until you are satisfied with the maximum height of the flame. Reinstall the limit ring so that it sits exactly like it did before you removed it. Reinstall the rubber gasket that holds the limit ring in place. Reinstall the lighter housing and voila, your lighter works like it did when it was new.

I did this with some S.T. Dupont Extend knockoffs, and a Colibri Retro, so I think the design of these things is probably mostly similar. 🙂

Nice one,Danny.Do you use a head mount magnifying eyepeice? And do you have any hints on cheap lighters that spark but don't come close enough to light the gas or problems with gas flow?

no magnifier, just my bifocals lol. As far as the cheap lighter spark but no flame syndrome, try this:

purge all the gas and air out of the lighter. Use a pointy scissors or something that will depress the valve and let the gas out. Hold the lighter upside down while doing this. Keep shaking the lighter and purging. Shaking and purging. The gas tends to expand when shaken. The idea is to purge all the air pockets out of the lighter. When you don't hear any more gas escaping, refill the lighter. It's important to use clean butane like Colibri or Lava. That gas is triple and quintuple refined. Ronson butane is full of contaminants that will clog your lighter. Also, once a week, if you have access to an air compressor, it is important to blow out the head of your torch with forced air. This keeps the debris from your cigar ash as well as contaminants from the fuel from clogging your lighter.

Refill suggestions:
keep lighter upside down.
turn flame level all the way down.
keep lighter in operational mode either by holding the button down or keeping the flip lid open with a pen or some object. This will reduce the possibility of creating more air pockets in the tank. Fill until your window indicates full or until you can feel the lighter freezing in your hand across it's entire body.
Wait 5-10 minutes to use the lighter because the gas is much colder than room temperature and you can damage the seals on the tank/valves if you aren't careful.

If you try this, you can probably return a few lighters to service that right now don't work. Good luck

I don't like my flames to be too high. The flame is just as hot and doesn't waste my fuel.

many lighters wind up having such a small flame, that they are almost useless...this is to address that problem

Folks ... I have found one way to correct that without all the fuss ...

Lava Lighter Fuel ...

They stopped making it for awhile, but now it's back ... and there is no better fuel on the market.

It is quintuple (5X)refined ... and using it will increase ANY ligher by almost a half inch to an inch ... no kidding!

I use it in all my lighters, and it makes an incredible difference. I can sweat copper tubing with my Trifecta!

Slim is right on about Lava fuel. I started using it a couple of months ago and the difference is really noticeable. Haven't had any problems with my Colibri, Blazer and a couple of cheapies.

What's also worked well for me is to turn the flame adjustment screw to the lowest flame setting before filling. Then readjust after filling. Good tip on the Lave fuel. I'll get me some and try that as well.

Slim, I only use Lava fuel. This is a different problem not fuel related. See the Blazer web site for further info. Don't need to try my fix, no biggie. Those who have, are quite happy with the results. See thread over at CW, Lava fuel not withstanding
