I had a few questions regarding Maduro wrappers. First of all, y'all know I'm a newbie, still learning about cigars, so be easy on me -
1. I heard that some reputable companies such as Perdomo dye some of their Maduros - does anyone know if this is true, or know of other companies who do this? (so I can avoid them...)

2. I was thinking about maduros and wondering - it's just the wrapper that's different right? If you get a Padron 3000 maduro - the only thing diff than a Padron 3000 Nat. is the wrapper, right? Just curious, because it didn't seem like just the wrapper could make that much difference in taste...thanks for your help, and patience with a rookie!

It makes a HUGE difference ...

Try this sometime (but not on a really good cigar) ...

take two cigars of the same brand/type/size ... remove the wrapper from one ... Smoke both ... tell me what YOU think ...

I'm betting you'll find I'm right

Steve is right. Huge difference.

Another test - smoke a Padron 3000 natural, and then a Padron 3000 maduro - both are great, but you will definitely taste the difference between the two.

Ethan,

1) Yes some companies do dye ther wrappers. The only ones that I can think of off the top of my head is Fidalgo.

2) Yes, the wrapper makes a HUGE difference. As to which wrapper is the best, that is all up to the each person's taste. Typically I prefer maduros, but also really really enjoy several naturals including AF Hemingways, Don Carlos', CAO Cameroons, etc..

The Wrapper is 50 to 75 percent of the cigars taste. You decide like SteveS said.

I will say that there is not much difference IMHO with the Padron Maddie or Nat. Amazing how that works...Sun Grown Wrappers are readily becoming my favorite.

99% of the smokes in my humidors are maduro's.

Smoke a PAN and then a PAM and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Not sure about the dyed wrappers. I'm interested to find out though.

Wow. Thanks, guys! So no one has heard about the rumors of Perdomo or other well known brands using dye for some of their wrappers? I can't remember where I heard that....

smithbw...

i have personally found an enormous difference in the PAM vs PAN.

the easiest way for me to describe the difference is that the natural has a very plain and common finish while the PAM is rich with flavor.

i'm interested to hear what others have to say.

maybe i need to smoke more PAN's...at least they are a little less expensive.

jrc9414 - Are we talking the same thing here? Padron Anniversary Maduro Vs Padron Anniversary Natural 64's?

Just want to make sure....As I find them both to be incredible with a slight strength flavor! Or maybe I have burned my tastebuds out!! 🙂

Ok, Ok.... I'll settle this. Both of you send me your PAM's and PAN's and I'll do a thorough experiment and post my findings in detail next week....

smithbw...

we're talking about the same cigars...like i said...maybe i need to smoke more.

it's kinda funny this thread came up because i smoked a PAN last night with a friend. the last cigar we smoked before that was a PAM and we both commented on the unbelievable difference. IMHO they are both great full bodied smokes but i'll take a maddie over a natural any day.

i will say that i probably have not smoked as many of the anniversary series as you have and my smoking partner hasn't smoked as many as me.

could just be my inexperience with top end naturals.

what does everyone else think?

Jim - I could be fried...

Smoked to many Havana's...I think Lowman was saying something about my taste just the other day.

al'Thor - Only from my dead cold hands can you pry the PAMs or the PAN's away.

it's a difference in how we each taste things ... I like PAMs (no, I love 'em) ... PANs are ok, but nowhere near as good ... but that's just ME ...

I was in the walk in humidor of a local store yesterday ... another guy in the walk in is looking for help, but can't find any because the clerk was sitting on a stool near the register in a near-coma ...

So this guy turns to me and says, "you find something good"?? ... I show him my Padron 3000 maddie and say "yep" ... he asks, "isn't that a pretty full bodied cigar?" ... I say "yep" ... he says, "well, I can't smoke those .... they make me too dizzy" ... I aim him in the direction of some mild smokes ... he buys a Toraño Reserva Select ... as we get outside, he cuts/lights it ... comments on how wonderful it is, thanks me and walks off ... I smoked the Padron after dinner ... mmmmm ... loved it too.

But that guy wouldn't have been happy with my selection nor would I have been happy with his ... but both of them are good cigars ...

just a difference in how we each taste things ....

To pick up on what Steve said originally, you can purchase a five pack of a particular sized cigar from a competitor, each with the same filler and binder but with a different wrapper (candela, nat, EMS, mad, oscuro). Best way to see just how much wrapper affects taste.
