gents,

I have 20 cigars in a ziplock bag with a boveda 72% packet. I have a new, seasoned 100 ct humidor with boveda packs and humidity registers an average of 68%.

today i tried two smokes from the zip lock bag, they would not burn and/or wrapper cracked. These cigars have been in the bag for a month.

The cigars in the humi were delivered to me 7 days ago. I lit one today and the run was incredible. It seemed as if there was a giant hole on one side of the cigar, and it went all the way through.

I dont smoke dog rockets, but these humidity issues are enough to make me switch to stamp collecting. Any suggestions. I'm a novice and would love some advice.

First off...a zip-loc bag is a bad way to go. The seal is airtight, which can kill your cigars. They will become overmoist, causing the filler leaves to expand, which could crack or damage the wrapper.

It is very important to calibrate your hygrometer using the salt test to ensure the accuracy of your humidity reading. The fact that your hygrometer says the humidity is sitting at 68% does not necessarily mean your humidor is offering a relative humidity of 68%. One must calibrate the hygrometer to receive the true relative humidity.

Why would you leave a cigar in a zip lock bag to begin with...good for shipping! Humidity should be at 65% to 68% no more.

Steve R, thanks for your help. I calibrated using the boveda system and had to add 1 % point to the digital hydromoter. I will leave the zip lock open until i can add more the humidor. thanks again.

charlie;

thanks a lot, i think 65% is about right. Most web sites tell me 65-75 but anything registering 70 or over for me does not burn well. Thanks again.

I leave cigars in the baggies & sealed with no problem.

I don't add a humidifying device into the bag.

Hmmm sounds like a humidification device error 687.

Call tech support. Like Stever said "salt test" then work backwards from there.

Show your wife where you keep them. I'll check them out for you when I come over.

The only way to truly calibrate your hygrometer is by using the salt test. Throwing Bovedas into your humidor along with your hygrometer, or throwing bovedas into a zip-loc along with your hygrometer, will not do it.

Sealed bags is not bad for short term...but a month, in my opinion, is far too long for them to be in a sealed bag, outside of a humidor.

Ok, the salt test it is. Thanks folks and tell pacman to stay away from my wife and my cigars.

salt tested last nite. Digital hydrometer reads 75%.

Yep, think you found your problem...75%=moist tobacco=bad burn, splitting and all the other problems you have been having. Solution, digital hygrometer and a another humi with a decent seal but not airtight like a ziplock.
