This is but one example of the amazing work of the Cuban-born artist, Yuri Martinez.

Some of his works are cigar-related while a great many deal with some of the issues he has seen and experienced during his time in Cuba.

His portfolio also includes some cubist paintings, as well. I simply wanted to get the 'word' out there as this is a very talented man and his art is something to be shared.

Let me know if anyone is interested in purchasing any of his paintings, as I have a direct contact with the person representing Yuri.

if you stare at it long enough, you want to stare at something else. i see nothing of interest. if the cigar was not in the picture, no one here would pay attention to it.

When you obviously know nothing about art, you should not comment on it.

Sorry Rick, I accept ignorance about art but not when you mock something you have no knowledge of or appreciation for.

Oh....and welcome back from Vegas, hope you did well.

In defense of Rick, who was being Rick, blunt and opinionated, one of the reasons he is a favorite around here even though a lot of us disagree with him about 98% of the time - and not that Rick needs anyone to defend him - there could very well be a few educated art critics who agree with him. I think the painting has artistic values, in the use of color and the composition. I might compare it to some of Modigliani's portraits, in a way, and I do like Modi. Like everyone else, I am in love with my own opinions about art, never tire of giving them, and screw yours.

I feel like rambling on.

When the critics were loving Warhol, I was baffled, like Rick's post above. I still think he was a pop culture fraud, with his Campbell Soup posters. Ad agency artists do that just as artfully all the time. By Warhol standards, a bottle of Heinz Green Ketchup is art, and each of us can afford an original.

Calling a crucifix in a glass of urine "art" is a fraud, too, same as it would be if it were a Star of David in the glass, or a statue of Bhudda, or a bobbing-head Elvis. My last urine sample was every bit as artistic, and quite colorful I might add. I would have exhibited it, but I couldn't find a sponsor.

Didn't Phillip Glass publish a composition that consisted of several minutes of sitting at a piano without touching the keys? Some critics raved about this "music" as if it was the purest form of expression. Debate some of Glass' other works but please not this one. Critics who eat this crap up and analyze it to death amaze me. Maybe drugs would help. I'm sure they would help my urine sample.

Look how far we have come since that insipid, terribly outdated and never even completed Mona Lisa. Hell, anyone could paint that.

To me art has many variations. A crucifix in a glass of urine I believe is more of a statement in the form of marginal art.
The masters speak for themselves. Pop art was and continues to be trendy.
If you study the pic by Yuri Martinez,it will tell a story. Or maybe it was what I was smoking,LOL. X

great two weeks in vegas. any time toby and i spend together with no phones, no input, no time schedules, is always wonderful. i even won $30.00 on the football parlay cards. ate a few of the best cannoli's i have ever had. went twice for the new york white pizza, and once for the lobster cantonese.

we ended up at the palms a few times. it's a playboy club and most of the patrons were mid to late 20's to mid 30's. many of them had not seen an older person since their grandparents had died. one of the youts said i was da man. must have been my cigar.

about commenting on things i know nothing about. does that surprise you?




and to touch ever so lightly on a sore subject, many people post nice things about what's his name. at least i admitted i know very little about painting art.

Rick clearly stated that he was willing to learn.
I am not trying to sound condescending, but I couldn't see where he was mocking, just that he didn't see anything interesting in it.
Art is in the eye of the person viewing it. While some folks cannot see art in some vehicles, I see art in most vehicles, although some vehicles, I see as repulsive art. 🙂
I have seen "fine" art that looked like a little kid did it, but someone evidently found it intriguing.
The funny thing about art, everyone has their opinion of it and should be able to voice their opinion of it, whether it be mocking it or not.
Because a person doesn't have an appreciation for a piece of art, doesn't mean that they are wrong and in my opinion, shouldn't have to keep from commenting on it. Critism is often one of the best ways to improve on something. 🙂

Now that's a vacation, glad to hear you had a good time. I've never been to Vegas, maybe some day.

About the art....I have no problem with your opinions, I rather enjoy them. It's the last statement you made about, "if it's art, I am Fred". I took it as you saying it is not art.

Everyone certainly has an opinion on art and opinions are what make art exist, but to say something is'nt art is ignorant, IMFO. Art is my life and I sometimes get defensive about it. I meant no personal attach and certainly hope you know me better then that.

if you want to see some fantastic art, look up "po shun leong, making art boxes" by tony lydgate. i bouht it for ross's birthday but i haven't finished it so he will get it christmas. if it does not blow your mind, i'll eat a hummingbird.
