Here's an interesting question. I was out on Monday with some friends smoking and one guy had an extra long cigar, probably about nine inches. He was thinking about cutting it in half and sharing it with one of the other guys. I told him to hold off until I talked you the Cbid board members.

Can he do this without totally messing up the cigar? In theory it should work, but now you're only smoking 4.5 inches instead of 9, so he'll probably lose the flavor changes that would happen over the 2nd half of the cigar. Also, the guy who gets the 'foot' half would have a stick with no cap and a large 'draw' hole.

Let me know what you guys think.

Rocco,
I have actually cut a cpl padron magnums in half and never had an issue with taste, wrapper peal or anything for that matter.. I think you have to consider what kinda gar it is and who makes it. A better constructed cigar is going to fair better than one that is so-so! I say cut away!!!!

Supposedly Clint Eastwood cut his H.Uppman ISOMs in half for those spaghetti westerns he starred in. I think most were filmed in Spain.

I've done that sometimes at lunchtime when I'm pressed for time ... grab a 7" churchill, cut it in half, smoke half today and half tomorrow ... always smoke the 'uncapped' end first and as long as I'm careful, it causes no wrapper issues ... and since I'm sure not gonna be smoking any of my better cigars under these conditions, these are cigars that would probably fall into most guys 'yard cigar' category

I've Cut some also... VSG Spellbounds... Perdomos... and I'll cut a Churchell in half just because sometimes though if I don't get right back to the other half.. it does it's unravel trick and becomes useless but to share with someone else I think would be OK.. I split a Perdomo (P) with my Nephew once...

Only did this once to share a large Licenciados. It didn't work very well. I supposed if you had a very sharp exacto knife, you could give it a shot.

Don't try cutting the gar in half lengthwise. That might not work so well for ya.

I think you will find many people who have many different views on the subject of cigar etiquette. I think the one rule that almost everyone agrees on is that they are your smokes that you paid for with your hard earned money, so do what you want to do with them.

I have cut a cigar in half before to share with a friend. I had no trouble with the cigar unraveling. I also took the half without the cap and had no trouble with the draw. Try as I might, I can never "taste" a cigar like others can, so I cant help you out on the flavor profile question. The thing I enjoy most about cigars is the camaraderie that I share with other smokers and the fact that it makes me take time out of my hectic schedule to slow down and enjoy some of the finer things in life.

IMHO, tell your friend to slice up that cigar and share amongst friends. It'll be good for his cigar karma.

As a general rule, when I go to a public place, where I'm going to smoke a cigar, I bring along one or two extras to share.

Well, on Monday, I forgot my general rule. I grabbed a very old, original blend red label Torano Nicaraguan President, about 8.5 x 52, and headed off to the coffee shop I frequent, that has an outdoor patio, where you can smoke.

I got a large Guatemalan French roast, bought two newspapers, and grabbed an outdoor table. Just as I was about to take out my cigar, an elderly chap, who lives in the apartment building next door to the coffee shop, came walking into the patio and waved a greeting.

Uh, oh... I've always had an extra stick for this fellow. He relishes the cigar and the company. I felt awful.

When he went inside to get his coffee, I slipped my cigar into the cutter, and cut it to about 55/45. I lit the foot, reserving the longer unclipped cap half for my buddy. When he came outside, I offered him a Torano "rothchild." He graciously accepted and smoked it. Because I smoke very slowly, we finished out sticks in about 40 minutes. It was an excellent cigar, but not the same as smoking the full President.

I had to laugh at my own post, above. I refer to the "elderly chap."

Ha! I've been retired and buying senior citizen movie and concert tickets since July, 2000. I'm sure all the folks grabbing coffee on their way to work just saw dos viejos hombres.

I personally have not cut a cigar in half yet. But there is an "elderly chap" who hangs out at the local cigar shop that swears by it. In fact he buys the shop's brand bundles of churchills and cuts them in half for his "daily smokes". He is a pretty cool guy and he has taught me a few things about enjoying a good cigar.

Rocco, I don't want to sound jaded, but Ive never cut a gar up. 32 years of smokin' sticks, I either plan time to smoke the size cigar, or if someting came up where I had to stop smoking, I usually cut the foot end off just past the burn.

The whole thing comes down to picking the right gar and planning quality time to spend with it.

The guys are right as far as the type of cigar to "cut". Unwrapping may occur if it wasn't stored properly, i.e. not humified enough or rough handeling at the bottom of your dor. Even a premium doesn't fair well if the right conditions wern't met.

My friend, SeaCoast, sometimes cuts his cigars and it drives me crazy. I look at it as, if you don't have time to smoke the whole thing in one sitting, get a shorty.

I smoke mostly large ring cigars. 54 and up. Most cutters don't fit anything but the cap. Rick gifted me a great cutter that fits a 60. Thanks Rick.

If I have a larger one I'll just let it go out peacefully.

Guys,

Thanks for the advise. I just didn't want these guys to do something stupid and ruin the cigar. Next time I'll let them cut away.

I'm surprized Godfather hasn't posted under this yet.

One time him and our friend Jason went to this smoke shop (it was most devoted to selling cigarettes, but carried a few cigars) and got an Excaliber 1066, and the redneck lady working at the counter asked GF if he was gonna cut it in half and share it with Jason.

GF thought she was the biggest dumb@$$ he'd ever met.

It's been my observation that in general, each of us, no matter how old we are at the moment, perceive someone who is about 15 years older than ourselves as being "an older person" ...
