I always read about cigars that people get and don't like, they say I am going to put where my moching friends can get them. I am the only one that wouldn't give my friends a crap @ss cigar? I figure if I don't like it then I am not going to give it to a friend. I do understand they may like what I don't but I will not point them to a cigar I do not like. Why do people do that to their friends?

Maybe they aren't really friends?

It depends on the friend.
I always guage what to offer a friend, based on their smoking history, and their pallet. I have a friend, that loves macanudos, I offer him macanudos, or a similar cigar, Like a Don Diego. Personally I hate Macanudo, but my friend, loves them. I would never offer a friend, a Thomas Hinds, Bad Frog, or Lone Wolf, though I hate these as well, I wouldn't wish them on an enemy, much less a friend. Just because I don't like something, doesn't mean it's bad. But my humidor, is open to all of my friends, if they want a FFOX, fine, if they want a PAM, sorry fresh out, maybe next week. If they want an ISOM, sure, but if they like a mild cigar, I have one, that I will never smoke, that they may love.

I'm with you, Homebrew. I let folks choose, or I pick something they might like if they don't know about smokes. When they put it down halfway through, sure, I cringe a bit. Whatever. But that is a small thing, to see a good cigar tossed out, in comparison to the big thing that friendship is.

Besides, if you want smoking friends, you gotta hook them in with the good stuff. This tends to come back to you in the end: get your friends smoking good cigars and you end up with a circle of open humidors...thus, happy smokers all around.

My take.

I buy some crap smokes because I have friends that actually like them. I have repeatedly given my Dad good gars. He smokes about a third and tosses them and I feel the pain as the gar hits the ground. He prefers Dutch Masters so that's what I buy him. My younger brother loves the Rum Rumbas. My youngest brother asks what I smoke then gets one of them.

Many of my friends enjoy an occasional cigar. Anything, other than very mild, I know will turn them green. I prefer a cigar that is to the strong side of medium. Occasionally I'll buy a box of cigars expecting them to be in my preference profile, but they turn out to be too mild or one dimensional for me. I know my friends will enjoy them and offer them to them.
I never buy crap, so I never offer crap.

Herf Meister - I am with you Bro! I would never give a cigar to anyone that I don't personally like. Just my opinion.

Sorry, in my excitement I did not draw a picture for some challenged brothers...

An example: I don't Like Bad Frogs but I do know a brother that will smoke em. Just becasue he will smoke one of these horrific gars does not mean that (Although I Might Have Em in My Inventory) that I would even offer him one of these...

Hope this helps to clear up my point! 🙂

I think the point of passing off "bad" sticks to friends isn't so much that yoou are giving them a bad cigar. You might have something that you pick up a five pack to try and decide isn't the right flavor for you. Most gar smokers know someone who can't tell the difference anyway or are still in the process of being brought along to level of truly premium smokes.

Look at it this way, a cigar might be "bad" compared to some of the other big tastys in your humi, but compared to the Swisher Sweets that your friend picks up at the gas station...

I really agree with what Steve R said. I do not offer crap becuase I do not buy crap. Just because a smoke is cheap doesn't mean it is not good. I offered my grandpa RyJ. Sancho Panza, and cheap Indian Tabacs. He liked the Indian Tabacs the best but he is considering buying a bundle. He normally smokes these nasty Certified Bonds that used to be made where I live and still does today.

Does the friend have a sense of humor? How bad do they want one of your smokes?

Well my best smokin' buddy gave me a moldy Lone Wolf. I still hack on him about it. Bad smokes between friends can still be enjoyable. It was good, but not for smoking.

I give hell and remind him everytime we smoke, he offers now, and I say,"your cigars make want to barf!"

He has better smokes now but I it say anyway. JF

IMHO, it depends on which friend and what "good cigar" ...

My cigarette-smoking friend "J" will accept a cigar if it's offered and will on occasion drop a little hint that he'd appreciate the offer ... BUT, he has never smoked more than half a cigar, most often smokes a very small fraction of it and his expressed appreciation for and his comments about that cigar are pretty consistent from one cigar to another, irrespective of whether I think it's a "good cigar" or not ...

My oft-mentioned, non-discerning next door neighbor raved over THE worst cigar I ever had and even asked on more than one occasion if I had another of those great cigars I could give him ... he smoked 22 of the 25 I had and LOVED them ... and he absolutely DROOLED over a yellow band Cohiba I gave him once, saying (sincerely, not sarcastically) it was evidence that we were really good friends if I'd give him a cigar that good ...

Those guys are both friends and I'm not putting them down, but I've learned the hard way that neither can tell the difference between CAO and a Centurion, or a PAM and a yellow-band Cohiba and both will waste most of ANY cigar that's given to him ...

But ... if I finally get the opportunity to meet one of the many friends I've made in this forum with whom I've herfed, swapped e-mails, smokes, accessories, cheesecakes and more, those Centurions and yellow-bands won't be seen, smoked or even discussed ...

I would never just offer a 'crap' cigar to someone. But I do offer them what I know they like. Which to me may very well be crap. And I will buy and keep them on hand for when they visit.

I know that before I offer a friend a smoke a I will try to gauge his likes and dislikes and give him a smoke accordingly. Now, if he just doesn't know what he likes, I will turn him onto one of my lesser smokes, but never a bad one. But, there are times when we are fishing/working/hiking, that it won't matter what they hell we smoke and I break out my "garbage" smokes, which I in turn will smoke as well.

I only have three smoking partners and I always give them one of everything I buy and they do the same to me. It doesn't matter what kind because at the end everything gets even and when we do a herf everybody bring their best primos and we always have a good time. It is all about the good time and friendship

I think a lot of us just "kid" about giving what we consider a bad cigar to our smoking buddies. If I dislike a cigar and I offer it to a bud I tell him up front that I dislike it and why and he usually wants to try it to see if he dislikes it also. thats the way I am when it comes to smokes people offer me. Its like a movie I gotta see for myself.

I have learned over the years that not all cigar smokers are created equal!!
With that said I don't have very many friends that smoke quality cigars, some of my bodies seem to think that phillies and swishers are fine cigars, needless to say that those friends do not get an 8 year old Opus X or a 5 year old PSD#4. I give cigars to people depending on their pallete and what they enjoy. I don't have a problem giving out cigars if I know people are going to enjoy them.
Case and point, a few weeks ago I had a bar-b-que. Invited a real good friend of mine and my brother in law. My brother in law enjoys good cigars, while my buddy likes swishers and the occacional macanudo! So after a fat steak dinner, we procceded to go relax by the pool. I thought what was the perfect smoke, and decided to bust out some of my aged cubans. Neither one of them had tasted a cuban. I decided on some PSD#4, that were about 3 years old. To make a long story short my brother in law smoked almost all of it while my buddy smoked maybe 1/3 of it, both of them puked about 30min after smoking them!! Never again, it was a waste of really nice cuban cigars, I could have easily given my buddy a macanudo and my brother in law an aged Fuente. Neither choice is crap, but it would have been a better choice.
