I recieved this in the mail Friday. I live in San Jose, CA. Its a survey about multilingual issues in CA. I didnt know how clear this would be so below is a copy of the questions pictured.

I personally feel that immigrants should learn English ASAP. Many dont even try. I know for a fact, in the bay area we have many races, from everywhere in the world. It's frustrating to do business sometimes.

Immigrants should change to become one of us, not the other way around. Just my opinion.

Here are the questions, My responses are the asterisks(*).

The Survey:

1. Have you personally noticed an increased use of foreign language in your community over the past few years?

as they say, you ar in california, speak spanish.

one of the problems of the new immigrants is they do not wish to be a part of this country. they are perfectly willing to partake of our advantages, but they don't wish to contribute.

when my grandfather and grandmother came through ellis island, it was a source of pride for them to learn to speak english and to become citizens.

when i go into a shop for anything and the people don't respond in english, broken or otherwise, i rarely do business with them. when two of them and i are discussing something that has to do with business and they start talking in their language, i interupt them and tell them that is not polite.

the idea of printing things in a few different languages pisses me off. print it in english only and if you as an immigrant want to live here and be a part of this country, learn to speak our language.

I guess the part that pisses me off the most...Your taxpaying dollars went into forming the questions, the committee to craft them and formulate the answers, and the politicians that feel the need to want this common-sense opinion survey!

Can't speak the lingo...get out! Anyone ever been to Quebec? Then you know how the cost to mark everything in 3 and 4 languages is bankrupting them!

Next time you're in a foreign country just speak English and see how far that takes you. Now imagine moving to that country and maintaining the urge to speak only English. Think they're gonna adopt laws to favor you? Why should we!

It hasn't been that long since US citizens traveling abroad were termed "the ugly Americans" due to a seemingly arrogant expectation that we could speak English everywhere we went ... no need to speak French in France for example, just speak English and if they don't seem to understand, speak in a louder voice ...

Were I to move to Rio, Paris, Cairo or Tokyo, I have no doubt I'd have a rather urgent need to speak the local language ... there is no reason immigrants to this country should fare differently ...

    Mag,
    I like your answers.
I've watched quite a few people lose jobs to people who speak little or no english and then they had to hire interpreters too.

You're tax dollars at work. LOL!

Not to worry. Second genearation immigrants will all speak English, and if not, then the third. Everyone in the world wants to speak English. It is the world's language, that's why it is so rich, and it has been enriched by every other language in the world because it is so open. Almost 100% of Indians speak English (for many that is the only way they can communicate with each other), and there are more people in China studying English than there are English speakers in the world, or close to it.
