I was enjoying a Monte #2 Habano recently while out. A young gentleman next to me said, "what kind of cigar is that?" I explained, one of the best money can buy! He said, oh yeah, I bought some of those recently while on a cruise in Jamaica. They were like $3.50 a piece.

I tried "politely" to explain that this was impossible, but before I could get a period on the end of my sentence, he piped up and said, "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY $3.50 IS IN JAMAICA!!??"

Rather than try to explain to this dipsomaniacal young man that I have cutters I purchased new that are older than he was, I simply nodded reassuringly and commended his frugal cigar-hunting prowess. I lamented the fact that I was not privy to such excellent deals.

He seemed to take solace in his superior knowledge and I think we both walked away thinking the other was an idiot. But only one of us was right 🙂

He wouldn't have understood or agreed if I'd tried to explain it.

Having enough sense to know that the $3.50 Monte #2 was part of your acquaintances category #3, was smart on your part. You might have asked him if a Monte #2 costs $3.50, what does a full Monte cost? Risky.. but could have been funny as hell...

Most of the time experience is the only friend we have in those situations. You did good IMHO, just let it slide by. Eventually experience will catch up to anyone, and we'll all be better for it.

The "young gentleman" doesn't know it but he got ripped off. I was on a cruise recently and a rather seedy looking fellow offered me any brand of Cuban for $1.00 each, including Monte #2's and #4's. Something about having low overhead because he was selling them out of the trunk of his car and didn't have to concern himself with advertising or maintaining a storefront. Bought twelve (12) boxes from him and as I figure it, I beat the "young gentleman's" price by about $300. So there!!! Argue with that if you can!

Robby, good choice to let it go. Its no use in correcting him, because he wouldn't have listened anyways. Once, I was at a poker game and gave a Bucanero Full Sail to one fella there who I didn't know. He took one puff and said, "this isn't as good of a cigar as I'm use to." I asked him what he smoked and he said, "I haven't smoked in a long time but, oh like Punch or Macanudo." I knew then he was an idiot, but I let it go and didn't say anything else.

Robby...sometimes there is no point in arguing. I just smoked next to a guy who was puffing on a 5 Vegas ISOM from Toronto. I couldn't break his heart...he was enjoying it too much.
