In his book Davidoff wrote that one should take a puff of their cigar once a minute. I tried that once with an Avo #2, and it took me an 1.5 hours to smoke it! I usually take a puff every thirty seconds, that's about right, not too rushed. I also noticed if there is a few minutes in between puff, it will be harsh for that puff.

as long as you enjoy the smoke, the time in between puffs shouldn't matter. everyone knows if you puff like you're doing a locomotive impression the cigar will heat up and the flavor will get harsh. however, if you don't puff enough it'll go out. there's definitely a happy medium and that's where most cigar smokers live their lives.

Wow, never thought too much about "time between puffs"! Is this some Miss Manners subject or what?

Ab, you read too much. You also have more patience than I do. Not only could I not time myself between puffs for an entire cigar, but I would have given up long before the 1.5 hours it took you to do so. The biggest question is "did you notice a difference in flavor when you methodically puffed your puros, or did it actually diminish your enjoyment"?

actually with the Avo, I did notice a difference, the taste was perfect, and I would sit there watching my watch waiting for the next minute! It was an experiment, and it was excellent. I have to read, it's my line of business.

I've lookied into this question for some time now. Actually, the "time between puffs" or TBP as we in the scientific community call it, is tallied in direct proportion to the "Price per puff" or PPP, if you like. This valuable question has appeared here on the C-Bid forum many times before and has given us all something to think about. If the TBP ratio is altered in any way the PPP goes up. However, the PPP is directly influenced by the rate of increase in the Global Market and therefore makes the TBP seem longer than it actually is. Hey, you heard it here first.....gentlemen......Brent

Gentlemen, I must say the old Southern Rule of Thumb(SRT) is if the damn thing goes out---you waited too long and if you want to keep on lighting and looking "sophisticated" then smoke a pipe!!! Another Southern term applies to the situation, "That dog won't hunt!" Meaning this is all a bunch of prattle! Smoke em and enjoy em, don't think too much about etiquitte and TBP!

And if you want to look "educated and sophisticated" buy a paisley smoking jacket and that will really make you look keen!

I'm lucky if I can wait 30 seconds between puffs. By puffing too often (or too hard), you do run the risk of heating up. Which is not pleasant. I haven't mastered the art of patience.

I see trouble brewin. Is the TBP measured from the moment you start your inhale, or when you finish your exhale? Sure, the difference could be small, but added up over the length of a churchill and you could be wasting valuable puffing time. I say just follow my motto: Timing tokes of torcedor tied tobacco takes tenacious temperment together with terribly tedius tidiness, thereby totally terminating your tranquility.

Is TBT or TBP anything like On time Performance as measured by the Airlines? God, I hope not!

I guess if I had to guess how long between puffs I would have to say about 45 seconds. It's like getting to the center of a Tootsie Roll Lollypop.......1, 2, hell man I just had to take a puff!

15-20 seconds between puffs on average for me.

I've heard proper manners is to take two long, slow puffs at your leisure, and then pass the smoke to your left. If configured correctly, the smoke shall return from your right side. The process is repeated until the smoke is no longer managable. This is, however, second hand information. I tend to finish a cigar in about forty minutes, almost regardless of size.

I'd have to agree with smokey take two long tokes(ah er puffs)Take two more and pass it.politeness would dictate a verbal response of EAR yourrturn as you pass it on.

Related to this, I was going to ask....

Can you smoke a cigar TOO slow (provided you can keep it lit)? Would a slow smoke affect the taste, etc.??

Sorry if this is a stupid question.
