Slim I HATE the cold but it looks very nice. I should probably take the "4 little poeple" They said they wanted to go to the snow. I told them it was white and cold!! They did not like that answer. Sigh I have a timeshare I guess I could use. How is it smoking (I don't ski, oh really) Until I go I hope for 85 at the beach 🙂

I will be going to Snowshoe W.Virginia in four weeks. I hope to have some fresh powder. The snow pretty much sucks on the east coast.

Rob --- I din't have any problem smoking cigars in the great outdoors there ... even at -9 degrees.

That may sound cold, but it's really not that bad. Don't get me wrong, a down jacket, gloves and a skull cap that will cover your ears are a must ... but it's a very invigorating, very 'crisp' and 'dry cold'. If you got snow on you, it wouldn't melt ... and you could just brush or shake it off like it was potato flakes or cereal!

The skiers were in 'shock and awe' over just how good it was. They said that there were just too many slopes that were untouched, and being the first ones down them, they said they felt like they were floating on air.

Like I said, I don't ski ... but I sure got a big kick out of listening to the 'lingo' being excitedly spoken as we were riding up in the gondola ... that all the experienced youngsters had for all the different types of conditions up there.

hey alabama - have you been to snowshoe before?

spend the money to have dinner at the fancy restaurant on site - be sure to order a game dish - the pheasant is not to be believed!

Snowshoe is referred to as the "upside down" resort because the lodge is at the TOP of the moutain with the trails all running down different directions to the bottom of the hill (different sides)

Depending on the path you take to get there, if you come up the turnpike you come pretty close to a nice but much smaller (and cheaper) resort called Winterplace, it is RIGHT OFF the turnpike, you can literally see the slopes from the turnpike, so it makes for a great place to stop and do a little warmup skiiing before hitting Snowshoe. It even has lit trails for night skiing. (although you gotta be pretty hardcore to do much of that, still, if you roll up about 4 after a full days drive, and it's another 2 1/2 hours to Snowshoe, I would get a flop room in the local Super 8 motel, ski a few hours, grab a burger, and head for snowshoe early the next morning.

I am a lucky guy, for I am 4 and a 1/2 hours south of Whistler/Blackcomb...and 2 hours away from the glorious Mt. Baker. Skiing is a dream on the west coast and Heaven at Tahoe.

Stapletonj.... I have been skiing Snowshoe for the past five years. I live in Ga. and it is the best place that I know of on the east coast.

I have seen the slopes to Winterplace from the interstate. It looks as though it is pretty decent.

btw, thanks for the info on the restraunt. I will definetly try the pheasant.

I lived in Salt Lake City for a couple of years and only skied there once. There is no comparison between the Rocky mountains and the Blue Ridge mountains. I hope to get back there one year to ski.

Too bad you didn't ski 'Snow Bird' while in Utah ...

I rode the tram to the top, just to check it out once (I was born in Utah), and I'll bet that place would change your mind ...

I have visited Snowbird once. It is probably one of the best ski resorts in the US. Unfortunatly I did not get to ski it though.

I also rode the tram to the top. It is an unbelievable sight.

Green with envy. Would love to be there if only for a few days. Awesome photos . . . makes me want to wax the skis and drive for 9 hours!!

justforfun --- we only live about 3½ hours from Tahoe ...

... but when we left last Friday, there was a blizzard going on.

It took us the ususal 2 hours to get to Placerville (via hwy. 50), but 4 miles up the road ... we had to put on the ol' chains.

It took us an aditional 4½ hours to get over the summit (only 60 miles) and into Lake Tahoe. They even shut down the hwy at one point for 1½ hours due to avalanche danger ...

... the snow flurrys going across the road, and the heavy snow coming down was so bad, we had many white-out conditions to deal with, but it sure made for an exciting drive!

Ohhhh the dreaded summit!
One of the longest 60-mile stretches I have ever driven. Not many gas stations, a few cottages and A LOT of uphill, narrow, and ONE lane each way most of time. Hellish, but eventually worth it!

It is a shame that the Washington/Canadian border is such a hassle, or I would probably go to Whistler more often.
