VERY good cutter. But bear in mind that if you carry it in your pocket, reach for it very carefully. They have a tendency to spring open. I wore a band-aid on my fingertip for nearly two weeks from a deep cut (they are very sharp, which is what makes them so good). Now I don't carry one but do have one next to my humidor for small ring guage or tapered cigars (I almost exclusively use a punch for everything else). Just my thoughts.............

bassdude: from one tony to another, i'll tell you this -- the cheapo $2 punch i got (plugmaster it's called) has been THE best cutter by far. i've never used hi-end scissors or a xicar or anything fancy like that, no. but my plugmaster makes a clean, precise circular cut every time i use it.

Love my Xilar. Both of 'em.

If ya get one, make sure you register it on their website. You get a free sheath for it so you won't have it open in your poket.

Slim,

You (or at least I think it was you) posted a cutter competition article a few weeks (months) back. I didn't make a copy then, and haven't found it on my own. Do you still have the location of that article. Could you post the addy, or the article, here again, if possible. Greatly appreciated. Thanks.

only color and material of handle, but the blade is the same and the cutters have a lifetime replacement warranty as long as you do not abuse it by cutting wire, pvc, etc!

Read the WHOLE story here:

http://www.cigar-cult.at/englisch/be203.htm

I will still stand behing the Palio, above all others. And all that boils down to, is a personal preference. Nothing I have used yet (and have tired most all) can even compare to it in the precision and cleaness of cut.

Palio, double-bladed cutter ---

This cutter from a company producing surgical instruments in the USA is well-regarded by connoisseurs because of its precision. It received an excellent grade for its cutting quality. Concerning its form, material and size, the opinions diverged. At first glance, the device seems cheap due to its plastic body. It has the special advantage of being very light and cleverly designed. Its disadvantage is that it glides in a somewhat unwieldy fashion. In the course of being closed, the blades click into place, which protects them very well, however it requires some effort to be opened.

Quality of the cut: 4th place, shared with the Wenger model

Design: 9th place

Function: 7th place, shared with the Wenger model

Overall rating: 7th place

Recommended price: EUR 86 (Jurors: EUR 60-95)

They can be bought for $32 ...

Almost every cutter has strengths and weaknesses ...

There is one thing to be stated before going further – the results of the test sometimes brought to light quite 'uneven' judgements about the individual products.

That isn't particularly surprising, since ergonomic and aesthetic evaluations are especially prone to very subjective perceptions. And in additon to this, a very stylish tool made out of select materials doesn't necessarily form well to the hand or cut with precison.

The aim of the Cigar Cutter Contest wasn't at all to choose the best of cutters. Rather, we had the intention of exploring the advantages and disadvantages of the individual products, in order to be able to offer a maximum of comparative information to our readers.

In order to make the interpretation of the results easier to you, it should be noticed that eleven criteria were evaluated. Concerning design, this included form, color, material, surface, weight and ergonomics.

Function was evaluated by the criteria of size, handling, diameter of the cutter's opening, safety and the quality of the cut.

The total number of points accumulated finally resulted in the total grade. The jurors were prevented from knowing the actual retail prices.

From the figures in parentheses behind the actual selling price you can see the sale prices which the jurors estimated.

Agreeing with Slim. The cutter competition article does offer a wide range of criteria for your own critical evaluation. Cost or manufacturer has little to do with what you like, as with the cigars we smoke. But the competition article does offer a range of opinions on a variety of criteria for selection I personally found valuable. Even the last place winner is a better cutter than the $1.00 cheap hacker you can pick up at most cigars shops, but even they work, and can be replaced numerous times for the cost of some other 'good' ones (several hundres times if you're looking at the Davidoff cutter). Points well taken Slim.
