I saw where some of the manufaturers have found that they will not be able to deliver their products to local tobacconists, if the senate version is adopted by law. It seems to me that everyone, including the little guy, get's hurt by this bill.
This Bill, the senate version, was crafted by Hatch, and that the last bit, which outlawed online cigar sales, was his amendment as well. Let the old **** know how you feel, especially if he represents your state. So Much for the Republicans protection our rights.

I was talking to somebody about this the other day. When they sail "mail order" does that include private companies like FedEx or UPS? Seems to me if it's just the good ol' US Mail, it may not end civilization as we know it.

My understanding is that the definition would include any "common carrier." In reality, I don't think anyone really means to ban cigars. I think a bunch of politicians are jumping on the bandwagon of restricting cigarette or "tobacco products" to minors (which, BTW, I agree with). I just don't think we can leave to chance that they will study the bill in detail, and realize the full implications of what they are signing into law.

Dear Mr. Walls:

Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 2824, the Internet Tobacco Sales Enforcement Act. I appreciate your taking the time to share your concerns with me about this important legislation.

As you know, H.R. 2824 was introduced on July 23, 2003 by Rep. Mark Green of Wisconsin. It has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee where it is currently being debated. I understand that you are opposed to H.R. 2824 because you have heard that the sale of Internet cigars will be prohibited should this legislation pass the House of Representatives.

I thought you would be interested to know that after the mark-up session in the Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property on January 22, 2003, the House legislation will require each person who engages in an interstate sale of cigarettes or smokeless tobacco to comply with all the excise, sales, and use tax laws applicable in the states where both the tobacco product is sold and where it is delivered. The sale of cigars via the Internet will not be affected.

The Senate bill differs largely from the House version and I would encourage you to contact your Illinois Senators with your concerns.

The ban would cause the forum to flourish, but probably not on here, as with no shipping Cbid would probably not be able to operate, and we'd have to congregate elsewhere, and I havent found such a homey place anywhere else! 😞
