CWF: let me clarify something about my AWOL statement -- i was referring to my PAST TENSE view of the president. there were a lot of men with rich daddies (or other means to power) who did a lot of things that they may not be proud of today.
and i agree with you that presidents' service records (or lack thereof or tarnishing thereof) have been lobbed back and forth like a game of hot potato. my view of dan quayle was that he DID serve ("those also serve who only stand and wait"). whether big daddy pulled some strings to keep him out of 'nam, i don't know. doesn't really matter.
that was then; this is now.
frankly, i don't give a fiddler's fart about clinton's sex life either. i don't think bush OR clinton have sterling reputations (alcoholism, cocaine use...).
the best professor i had in college was a total scumbag outside of the classroom. made it difficult to reconcile that with the fact that INSIDE the classroom, when he was doing his job, he did it very well, and i benefitted from his teaching.
but no one ever said that being human meant being simple and uncomplicated.
what i have to go by with my vote is how the man's doing in his job. and as far as that goes, i've yet to see a perfect job done by anyone there either.
i do think (now) that it's a bit much to hold people accountable for things that have nothing - zero - zilch to do with the job at hand. both clinton and dubya have done poor things and quite wonderful things with their time in office, imo.
i will grant this: dubya has at least restored the ILLUSION of "honor and decency" to the post of POTUS -- now whether you believe that it's real is going to vary from person to person. some think he's the best prez ever; some think he's a murdering liar. but we all know how the saying goes about opinion. 🙂
one thing that i DO respect bush for is the way he has lead this country towards respect for our military personnel. one thing that bugs me a lot about him is the way his administration is screwing over some of our veterans. again, it's never black or white. but on the whole, i am not surprised that he is able to inspire a LOT of respect from the military men and women. and i'm glad of that, because no one in uniform should have to worry about fighting a foreign enemy while also worrying if your Com. in Chief is friend or foe as well.
actually, i'd be interested in hearing hog's view on the prez from a military perspective.
