I am saving mine, to use on an ongoing project. I am converting an old refridgerator, into a cabinet Humidor. I have been working on this project, for some time, but am nowhere near finished. I am taking spanish cedar, from cigar boxes, and lining the fridge with them. I plan on taking all of my cigar bands, and glueing them to the outside, and then clearcoat over them. This is a long term project. Since I am placing odd shaped pieces of wood along the inside, like putting together a puzzle. I am debating on putting a household thermostat inside, and kicking the compressor on when the fridge gets over 70 degrees, but not sure If this will work.

P.S. Kind of a longwinded explanation for my bands huh.

Interesting question.......I typically don't toss the band away........but really don't have any good use for them. I've got a plastic wastebasket that probably has 500+ bands in it. Don't really even know why I hang on to them........thanks mydsooner, for a 3:00am sleepless night question to ponder.......

some i've put aside for small, useable projects to send out to my BOTLs in PIFs and trades and such.

i'm saving many, though, for one project in particular: i've got this blank 6x6 canvas from back when i used to paint. i'm going to gesso it up, paint the background black and then paste every band i have onto it, taking years probably, until it's all covered. then i'll cut a circle around it so there will be a big black canvas with a huge circle of cigar bands in the middle. then i'll clear coat it, hang it and enjoy having a lot of little works of art in one big work of art. 🙂

I have always led myself to believe I will use them someday to cover a humidor I will build but that is one of those projects that is a possibility and not a probability. Hey homebrew. All you have to do is bypass the internal thermostat and mount one that breaks the common leg to the compressor and when it goes above 70 it will call for cooling. If you want, I can draw a diagram and send it to you.

I have anyone that I smoke with initial them. I put the date and place and any special circumstance about the experience on the band. I then just save them in a box.

I have a Cigar Dossier that a friend gave me back in '97. Each page is divided into 4 slots for information about the smoke (brand, size, where puchased, date smoked, price, rating, comments, and a few other data points). It also has a place for the band. It's a great way to refresh the memory about specific smokes over the years, as well as finding a home for all those bands.

The one I have was put out by Mako Publishing. I don't know if this specific one is still being published, but I've seen a number of the Wine Dossiers around. If interested I'd suggest checking with your local smoke shop.

I have about 100 bands saved. I am looking for more if anyone wants to get rid of them. I am building a 9 seat poker table and want to cover either the table or the trays with the bands. Nothing better than poker and gars.

I toss most of them in the trash. But brands like CAO and cuesta rey that offer swag, well you gotta keep those. I did polyurethane a few of them on top of my workbench. but mostly they end up in the trash.

I just throw them away. When I was growing up, my old man was a cigar salesman. We kids always thought it was cool to get a 'cigar ring' from dad. Every time I take a ring off a cigar, I instinctivly put it on one of my fingers and think of the big guy. He passed on a few years back, but I always think of him every time I light up. The things you remember...

Like some of the other guys I also keep a smoke-journal of sorts. I have a leather travel journal from Barnes & Noble or something that in which I glue the bands along with the date smoked and a short rating. I like to go back from time to time to see how aging has helped certain smokes.
later,
Tony
