Greetings!!

In this region, my home, of the People's Republic of California, there are only two places a man can go to get education and information on the proper care and feeding of his beloved cigars. The first being populated by downy-faced lads, toting pipes and answering sincere questions with jests and derision, the second being small, fancy, and priced only for those with more money than sense. So I ask you, the Forum, my questions…

I have smoked the occasional cigar for quite a while, recently, I fell in to a deal on a large humidor, and an even better deal on a quantity of some good cigars. Now I am not able to smoke as much as I would like to, so I really need to know the ins and outs of how to properly store my cigars. Information, even on the web, is spotty at best, and there are as many opinions as, well, you know the rest. But the people who contribute to this forum seem to be unusually knowledgeable, and I would greatly appreciate any info you might be able to pass on.

If the perfect temp/humid. for a cigar collection is 70/70, what happens when;

Humidity High/Temp High-
Humidity High/Temp Low-
Humidity Low/Temp High-
Humidity Low/Temp Low-

For someone like me, who is not a connoisseur, who doesn't have time to babysit my humidor, who can't talk the wife in to moving the crib out of the house and the humidor in from the garage, who lives in a climate that varies from extreme heat to moderate cold, what are acceptable limits of fluctuation for Humidity and Temp?

It is pretty straightforward to up the humidity in my humidor (add fluid) but how do I lower the humidity?

Are the additive solutions OK to use? If you use anything other than distilled water, does it impart any of those chemicals to your cigars?

Sorry for my long-windedness, and Thank You in advance for your consideration, I will appreciate any advice you all can give me, and remember,,, use small words...

OK Well ONE person gives me some info, and I haven't been on this forum long enough to know if and why you guys are making fun of me? Seems to be the same 'tude I get from the teenagers? Or maybe I am just not in on your jokes. I don't mean to bring down the level of sophistication of your forum, just trying to get help. So thanks Watch_Guy! I'll get to reading!!

Welcome to the boards.
Yes you are missing the humor. These are questions, that have been answered before. Some of the oldtimers, are tired of re-answering these questions.
Yes, the link you were given should answer your questions. If you have any more after reading the link, shoot me an email.

GREAT WEBSITE Watch_guy!! Just what I have been looking for, answered questions that I didn't even know I had.

And defined "Cigar Wonks" for me.

Thanks for the clarification Homebrew, this is what I hate about some forums.

Sorry to bore you oldtimers by not waxing rhapsodical over the bouquet of nutmeg and coffee in my fine cigars, but I get bored with stuffed shirts making fun of those who know less than they do. Take some advice from me, bored with the thread? Skip it, works great for me!

Until then, I will keep puffing my uncouth cigars in blissfull, uneducated ignorance, and enjoying them just as much! What goes around comes around guys!

Thanks for being kind to a newbie...

If the perfect temp/humid. for a cigar collection is 70/70, what happens when;

Humidity High/Temp High- cigar beetles start to hatch and eat your favorite sticks. All tobacco leaf has some eggs on it, so you have to make sure they don't hatch by providing them the high heat that they need.
Humidity High/Temp Low- soggy cigars with hard draws
Humidity Low/Temp High- dry sticks that burn to hot and fast and may also have cigar beetles
Humidity Low/Temp Low- dry sticks

70/70 is a good target. You will find, however, that many long-term storage recommendations are for lower humitity like between 60 and 65.

As far as comments from others that this has been asked before - my message to them is: tough, stop whining. It is part of each and every forum around the world. If you don't have something constructive to add or don't want to answer because you are tired of it, then just shut up.

I don't understand how anyone can not want to share their knowledge, especially when it is such an awesome hobby as filtering air through great tobacco.

Arch,

I'll guess that "Alphabet" refers to the fact that you seem to know it. (BT, was I close?)

What you endured seems to be a sort of initiation, at least for posts that are made without evidence of doing one's homework first; but before you decide to leave, check out the thread "How do you rate the cigarbid forums??", over on the Miscellanous board.

And you'll enjoy sorting out who's who. (E.g., Slimboli is the "Lord of Discipline". Fear him.) It will be worth it.

This was my first source of cigar info, also recommended:

Hehehe, Well this IS where I am doing my homework I guess, thank you for the honest answers/re-directs, I have gotten more info in a day than I could find last few weeks!! Just looking in the wrong spots I suppose.

Already figured out what I am doing wrong with my Humi, got prices on spanish cedar for a bitchin' igloo-ador, won a few more auctions than I intended, and have a few submissions for the dog rockets! Boys, it don't get any better than this!

I will try not to waste anyones time by givin' what I got with Slim-Bo the Moderator. Fear? Pah! You should meet my mother in-law!!
