I have a 200+ count GLASS dome top humi that I cannot get up to the right humidity levels. I have tried everything, beads, humi sticks, bottles of Perrier 🙂, but nothing is getting the box from being way to dry. It usually stays around 50?

Now it isn't the most air tight unit, but it is better than most, so I am thinking I gotta empty the box and soak down the cedar a few times till it gets the humidity level up. Then get my hands on more climax beads.

Anyone else have issues with glass tops? Let me know how your solving your issues, our how your keeping your levels up?

Thanks,

PT 😞

Be a walrus with a glass top. Love a tight seal! If it doesn't seal tightly...look at some cork/rubber gaskets or weatherstripping to help stop the drying process.

What DMV said. Listen for that "woosh" when you close it. Also, I hope you don't mean literally soaking it down. LOL. At most, wipe it down with distilled water, then leave a bowl of wet floral foam inside for awhile. And finally, did you salt test your hygrometer?

Sometimes, we get so involved, we have to be reminded of details by someone on the outside. Good luck.

My glass top has a very tight seal and It still is low usually around 65. I only used it to keep my smoking ISOMs in so that is fine for me. I did spend a bunch of time wiping down the cedar walls before I put anything in there. It was probably 2 weeks before I put anything in there.

Be sure to calibrate the hygrometer to be sure the readings you're getting are correct. X

Probably a silly question but where do you have this humi (any sunlight/heat)? I have a glass dome job and rides 68-70 always (2 years) and I am in and out of it all the time. Mine gets no sunlight at all.

"Now it isn't the most airtight unit. . ."

That's probably your problem - the seal.

You've worried about the glass, and changed the humidification. You probably should be looking at calibration and airtightness (if thats a word).

Glass is not an issue except when it comes to sunlight, but even a solid wood box in direct sunlight is bad news. I have several glass tops and they work exactly the same as the solid wood ones. The glass issue is distracting you from the real problem which I believe is massive air leaks or a badly calibrated hygro. Or both.

Good luck.

Kazama, I hate to admit it, but I think your right on the money. I do appreciate everyones input, but I think the issue is very obvious, I need to get a better seal on that Humi (and calibrate the hygro).

Now, how the heck do I do that!?!?!?

Rubber gasket? Cork? What???

Any ideas.

Place a light source inside the box. Cover glass with something to block the light. Turn out the lights. You should be able to see light where the box is leaking air. Once you know where and how much the air is leaking you can better determine how and whether it is worth fixing.

Post the results after you have checked the calibration of the hygrometer, or better yet get a digital.
