Ok, the other moment you’ve all been waiting for – my much anticipated Gurkha Platinum Tubo Review (I wrote this as I was smoking it):
(This was kept in a small seperate cooler w/ some other aromatics and spare sticks. I took it out of the cooler and let it sit on the desk for two days before opening the tube and sparking it up)
This cigar is packaged so beautifully, I always thought it would make a better gift. Well, after giving several away – I’m finally going to try one of these beauties. After opening the glass tube you’re immediately hit w/ a whiff of cognac – yum.. it’s pretty strong – hope it doesn’t overpower the cigar… as I roll it around I notice it’s very oily, soft and a little squishy and smells heavenly. The cutter just sank into it and the draw was ok, but a little tight. After spending great time and care to toast it well, the first few puffs were a little bitter w/ an odd taste caused by the cognac. After ½ inch it’s burning crooked but tastes are now blending together with still a strong cognac taste – but not bad. After finishing half of it the burn is still crooked and the taste has gone off again. It seems that all of the tobacco is very moist and it keeps closing up on me creating a tight draw – maybe I should have taken it out of the tube and let it dry out more before lighting it? After correcting the burn and trying to open up the draw, it began tasting much better – a nice rich tobacco taste, now a little spicy and the cognac is more subtle – a nice smooth flavor. The rest of the gar finished very smooth, the more subtle cognac flavor didn’t taste artificial and it never got harsh. Towards the end it actually tasted like an anejo at times! Very well balanced and flavorful. I ended up nubbing it! I’d highly recommend this cigar, but would suggest taking it out of the tube and letting it dry out for a while before lighting it. It’s VERY aromatic, so don’t store near any other gars after you take it out of the tube.
